I'm confused as to which type of course is the best certification or does it matter much? I want to teach English in China, Southeast Asia and then Latin America. Are schools fussy? It seems that there are loads of teaching English jobs and that once you have a degree and a certificate from any of CELTA TESOL TESL TEFL courses, it is enough. Am I correct here?

TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) mean pretty much the the same thing. The teaching is directed toward individuals whose first language is not English, and usually in private language schools. TEFL is mostly used in the UK, Europe and elsewhere overseas while TESOL is the most commonly in USA although many companies in Europe now advertise their courses as TESOL courses. One of the two most highly regarded TEFL/TESOL certificates is the Trinity College London Certificate in TESOL.

TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) is also found in the UK and overseas, but the objectives are slightly different from TEFL and TESOL. Classes usually take place in state colleges that have a high non-native speaking population in the local area. Also in the UK, TESL often involves teaching people from minority ethnic groups who need a level of English that will allow them to integrate into the educational, work and cultural environment.

CELTA, previously known as CTEFLA and the RSA certificate, is a University of Cambridge ESOL qualification. While TEFL and TESOL are the terms most often used to describe qualifications for English Language teachers, CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is arguably the most highly regarded TESOL/TEFL qualification of all throughout the world.

On completion of the course, Trinity TESOL certificates are not graded, although individual schools/companies may choose to devise their own means of differentiating the stronger participants from the weaker participants. On Cambridge courses participants are graded pass, pass B, pass A or fail, and it is part of the course assessor's role to ensure standardisation of grading between schools. So grades appear on certificates issued by Cambridge but not on certificates issued by Trinity.

"Are schools fussy about which certification I have?" you ask. In native English speaking countries they are and they mostly require a minimum 100-120 hour course certificate and a degree qualification. It is our experience that in many countries in Asia and Latin America for example, there is such a shortage of native English speaking teachers, that schools will be content that you have any TEFL qualification. They often are not concerned about the hours taken to complete the course. They are more concerned with personality and presentation and whether you have a third level qualification.

It is up to the individual to determine where he or she truly wants to teach and to then find out exactly what is required to achieve that. That will in turn determine the cost. We would advise anyone who is truly serious about TEFL teaching around the world to do a minimum 100-120 hour course through a reputed school/company, as the knowledge, tips, contacts and even friends you will gain are priceless.

We list many on-site and online TEFL course providers in our TEFL section:

www.learn4good.com/tefl_courses.htm

We advise you to ask the course provider as many questions as it requires to answer any queries or concerns that you have. There is an email contact link or an inquiry form with every company listing.

Hope this helps. Enjoy the course and the experience.
