I am a university student doing some research on children's behaviour linked to tidying up. I would be grateful if I could get some feedback from parents: how do you motivate your children to tidy up. How old were your children at the time you introduced tidying up to them? Do they rebel or enjoy the tidying up process? What do you find helps them to be more tidy (coloured storage boxes so they know where certain toys belong?). I hope to gather as much information on this as possible. I have posted this question on other parent forum sites and have been accused of having sinister intentions by asking these questions. If you find these questions inappropriate for some reason please do not leave rude feedback but instead ask me for further details. Many thanks

Make a game of it, "ok guys lots see who can get the most toys off the floor, the winner get to help me set the table and a treat/apple/a bath with bubbles" - everyone is a winner with this one, but it only works with the young. Either that or "Im coming in with the hoover and its going to eat any toys that arent put away" - coloured boxes just confuses them, its a case of do as I do with kids, they see me doing it enough times to know where things go

Before they are allowed to start another activity they must tidy away the previous, and just before bedtime we have a tidy up, the one who doesn't help gets no tv ( for half hour ) and no warm milk, spanking is never necessary and should never be used, why use voilence? I taught my kids as soon as they could understand me, about 18 months old, as with colour boxes we use them also each child ( i got 4 ) chooses a colour and then they pick up the contents of the boxes and put them in.

Not sure how well this will work for your kids, but i personally love to put on some newer modern clean rock music that is upbeat and make like a time limit for example maybe a hour and make it fun. saturday it was clean the house time in the morning so i pulled up this band called avowed on that myspace thing and let that play in the background while we cleaned. it worked for my kids. good luck with whatever way you decide to take though.
