I'm looking for a series of phonics books I used to teach my children to read. All I can remember is that they started with the letter a, then an, an ant, and progressed to sentences like: the man in the tan van. Anyone know anything about them?

I don't know if you are still looking, but I've found a great set. Not the ones you described, but they are working great for my kids. They are completely free, find them at www.progressivephonics.com this system integrates phonics with sight words in a progressive form.
Good Luck!

Try your local bookstore! I buy tons of workbooks for every subject at places such as Barnes & Noble, Borders, and others. They are useful for every grade level and ages. Even preschool and younger.
