It was a lovely afternoon early January 2008. Just walking around the White House and then along Pennsylvania Avenue. There was Willard Hotel which was looking luxorious and next door a small restaurant called -Occidental (which means Western).

We went in and ordered a couple apetizers, Braised Beef Short Rib and Veal Scaloppini. Everything was perfect. Mushroom Bisque soup was very delicious. Braised Beef Short Rib was so tender and tasty.

And then I got my Veal Scaloppini. Didn't expect it to be covered with bread crumbs so much. And I really didn't expect it to be burnt a bit. And it was completely unexpected to see that the other side of my Veal Scaloppini (when I turned it around) is almost all black.

After discussing this issue with the waiter and manager - I understood that there is no problem with eating burn meat at 21$. I finished my bottled water and got the bill. It was 75$ and some cents.

I crossed out the tips part and signed the 75$ bill.

Two days later I see my bank account charged for 94.88$ from Occidental Restaurand, Washington DC. It's Sunday and they are closed. There is nobody to answer my call and discuss where did they get that extra 19$ on my card.

I will have to wait till MOnday and go to the bank first to discuss - how to get that 19$ back to my card.

My suggestion:

If you go to 1475 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington DC 20004 - do not order Veal Scaloppini.
If you had a dinner there - pay cash. Do not pay with credit card as you might get some unexpected charges.

I still have those pictures of the burnt meat on my cell phone. A pity though that it has no PC connectivity.

The issue with the incorrect charge was solved after making 4 or 5 calls and leaving a voicemail message. Finally I got through the sophisticated system and spoke to one of the managers. I was politely offered to call them the next day but they have changed their mind after I suggested them to speak to my bank instead.

The card charge has been changed to 75.90$ with no more questions asked the next day.

Occidental Restaurant is an ok place to go but I do recommend to order ribs instead of a veal scaloppini and pay for everything in cash.

You would save on phone bills, your time and piece of mind.
