I feel I must warn parents not to spend any money on this web site. My son has belonged to this web site for over a year. He was a very active member and financial contributor to this web site. For every holiday or treat for a job well done, all my son wanted was a Gaia gift card to build his empire with. Until recently, he enjoyed the web site and made friends.
Now comes the dark part, Gaia apparently couldn't care less. My son's account was hacked. His items have been and still are being auctioned by the hacker. My son sent in 3 hacking reports. He even went as far as tracking the identity of the hacker for them. (We come from a tech family.) He did not click on any links. He had a decent password. He understands internet safety. The fine folk(s) at Gaia have implied it must be his fault. They have not returned the account and from what we can tell the hackers are enjoying the fruits of my son's account. He worked very hard to emass his items, etc. Gaia told me to join the web site so I could file a hacking report. In my opinion, when I sent them an email giving them the status of my son's account, his account ID, and his email that should have been information enough. In addition, it is well past the 7 to 10 days for RSVP from the general inquiry tech bunch. I would like parents to know that it is free to join and then the Gaia cash pimping begins. Kids use their gift cards or Gaia cash to buy items which can be auctioned, traded, and gifted. Unfortunately, when problems arise Gaia personnel are unwilling or unable to deal with them in a timely manner. In addition, this has been pretty traumatic for my son to receive text messages informing him of what items of his have been sold at auction and being unable to do anything about it. My son has some emotional problems, not that Gaia cares; I am sorry to say and this has been causing him a great deal of mental pain.
I do believe in karma though. I am curious if this has happened to other parents and what the end results were for them. If it is a persistant problem, I think others should know.

You shouldn't hate gaia for this type of thing. They are a big site and have millions of members to deal with. Plus they could have thought it a fraud since you were able to track the ID of the hacker. Must have meant hacking something to find out who did it thus meaning that by hacking to learn the ID of the hacker you in turn be come a hacker and null-void for any help. Stop bitching about a site just because something goes wrong. While I do agree its a waste of money I still love the site and enjoy everything about it without having wasted any money on it. If you spend money on it then its at your own risk, no one is forcing you to spend money on it. I have never spent a dime on anything on gaia and yet have had a fun filled 2 and a half years so where is the need for GC? Also gaia could ahve entered the account to follow up on it and found your son had done something against TOS thus meaning they don't have to help. Kids lie to their parents about tons of things. Also if your son is so upset about losing some pixel data and stuff then it means there is something very wrong with it. Most likely he spends too much time on the site just dealing with his items instead of using the site how its meant: Making friends. Stop bitching about things like this. |
