After a year with the I racing service I think it's just not worth the money. At almost$800.00 all the content and 1st year. There staff can be rude and when you spend that much money you would expect them to be nicer. The sim was glitchy ... on Daga races if there was a yellow you have to stop and wait on the pace car or rick being black flagged in the race. If you hit some walls it would grab you like a hook and not let go ... restart was the fix ... in a race. I recommend any Simbin product or rFactor or Live for Speed .... all very nice sims without the high expense and rude employees. Good luck racing!!

Yeah.. you (above) went WAY past where I could even consider going. For $800 I would have a kart and be at the local track enjoying myself (and have something to sell later on if I wanted to do so)
I guess that they can make it work for them.... I paid the $12.00 entry fee for ONE month... and read the twenty-one page disclaimer that says... oh I lost count at about 28 times... that you do NOT OWN ANYTHING, you are paying for a license to USE their software. I keep reading on their website, I keep looking for reviews from USERS, not the people that give TESTIMONIALS about how much they love it. That's great, I want to read about the other people and find out the REST of the story. I get on and drive, it's smooth... that's nice... ran a practice online.. ok, that went fine... but I STILL don't know what the costs are going to be. I keep looking deeper into the FORUM and I find a thread on Season 3 (they break the year into multiple seasons) which is just now starting (Aug 1, 2010) and I find a post that has the "down and dirty on what it will cost to level up."
You start as a rookie... want to move ALL the way up to "ADVANCED" rookie? Bring your wallet.
You are going to need to BUY (the license) for Watkins Glen. $14.95 Wow... well.. OK.. like that track a lot from GPL.... and that gets me to ADVANCED Rookie, you want to move on to Level D?? maybe you would like to try the Skip Barber series (open wheeled cars) and get out of the crappie 3 cars they start you with... well.. that's going to cost you another $71.75 You will need the car $11.95 and 4 more tracks @ 14.95 each. Maybe you wanted to go to Level D in the Mustang... that's going to cost you $131.55 for 8 tracks plus the car. Sure, if you have the money, I guess you can see that you are going to be racing with guys that have spent a LOT of money, and are going to be motivated to protect their interest etc... and you can have a good time. I would have to ask myself though... at what point does it stop being fun... and more serious practice for serious racing, and serious money. Then there is the license issue...they will tell you they don't want it to happen, but it can... and don't you just HATE it when it does... but if after spending this time and money... if they lose their agreement with any of these licensed entities... there goes your investment. A real catastrophe would be something akin to say.. IRL... dropping out... no more races, cars, or tracks... no license, no play and GEE... we are sure sorry about that. So... what if Skip Barber decided to raise the fee they want for their participation, and IRAcing doesn't agree to go along... they forfeit that license, and you get the bad news. Sorry, we don't offer that any longer.
I watched this for a year, to see how it was going to turn out... and I think they have a great idea, and I wish them well, and if I had money to burn, I might stay with it... I wish it was not so expensive, but... if you want to play here... you are going to pay some serious dough. |

Look, paying $800 in the 1st year is just plain... dumb. You are not required to pay that much. In fact, I'm willing to bet money that you haven't even used all of the content you spent that money on.
The smart thing to do with iRacing is just buy bits and pieces as you go along; just get the stuff you need. Also, it's wise to just focus on one particular series for an entire season, or even longer if you happen to enjoy it.
Take me, for example. I'm currently class B and all I've bought so far is 3 cars and 2 tracks. That's roughly $65 and enough to get me to class A if I wanted to. I initially signed up using the $5 promo, and afterwards renewed my subscription for 3 months for only $12 (another promotion). So up until this point iRacing has cost me around $80. That's 1/10th of what you spent and I'm willing to bet that I've done more races and had more fun than you did.
The cars and tracks I bought were well considered purchases; my aim was to advance a couple classes quickly while spending as little money as possible. I probably could have left out one or maybe both tracks I purchased and still get to where I am, but it would have taken me longer 'cause I would have had to wait until a "basic" track (one you get with the basic subscription) came along in a series I could drive in.
Anyway, now that I am where I wanted to be, I'm not going to buy any new content for this season, which ends in 2 weeks. Instead, I'm going to fully focus on one particular series for the following season. I already own the car so I'll just have to buy some additional tracks and I'll be set to compete in a series for an entire season (~3 months).
Don't get me wrong, iRacing is expensive and it will always keep costing you money, but if you put some thought into it and spread your purchases in a sensible way it won't hurt your wallet so much and you'll get more worth out of your money.
Also, I try to make as much use as possible from the different promotions they've always got going on. Buy a number of additional cars/tracks at once and you get a discount, for example. Or get a friend to sign up for 1 month and you get a month for free. Get him to sign up for 3 and you get $10 worth of credits. Compete in 8 out of 12 weeks in a particular series and you get $$ as well.
And you don't have to get all of the tracks for a particular series in a particular season. So what if you don't have 2 or 3 tracks? You don't race that series those weeks, big deal. Chances are some other series are running tracks you do have during those weeks so you'll still be able to get some racing in, be it in a different car and series.
If you don't feel like racing for a while, don't renew your subscription. Before very long you'll start getting offers from iRacing trying to lure you back in, for example by offering you 3 months for the price of 1.
Personally, I am determined to pay as little as I can to race on iRacing. Don't think of it as them milking you for your money. Think of it as you milking them for their service and trying to pay as little as possible for it while still maximising your enjoyment :-)
EDIT: I can't comment on the "rude employees" bit, as I've never noticed anything about that. Keep in mind, though, that they're just regular people and if someone is moaning at them for a stupid reason - as I can very well imagine many people do - they might get cranky.
And trust me, no Simbin title or rFactor or Live For Speed even comes close to offering what iRacing does. Not by a long shot. I've tried and loved them all, and I'm not saying they're bad sims (except Simbin titles, their physics are nowhere near realistic), but iRacing just offers that something extra. That's just my $0.02 of course and everyone's entitled to their own opinion. Hell, a year ago I would have agreed with you in saying that iRacing is definitely not worth the money! Now, though, I think it is. They're constantly improving the sim and their service so you might want to think about revisiting it some time in the future and see how you like it. After all, a 1 month subscription is only $12 and all the content you purchased previously will still be there for you to use. |

iRacing is the biggest ripoff in sim racing. Period and end of story. It's so glitchy and buggy it's not even funny. Have you seen the crash physics there? hahaha. Cars bounce around like rubber balls. It's hilarious. |

How much would I be looking at to make it to the nascar level? |
