Blackburn College, located in Carlinville, Macoupin County in Southwestern Illinois, is a four-year coeducational private liberal arts college offering a Bachelor of Arts degree with more than 30 majors. Blackburn College is one of 7 work colleges in the United States and the only one with a student managed work program. This means that students are responsible for the administration of the program including resource allocation, policy formulation, as well as direct supervision of their fellow students. At Blackburn College the student is able to obtain work experience while in school, reduce their debt load, and meet college expenses, while the institution is able to hire fewer full-time staff.

While cost reduction remains an important value of the work program still today, the opportunities it provides for student learning are paramount. As an integral part of student development at Blackburn College, the work program is a vehicle for personal growth including leadership opportunities and community involvement. Blackburn College is the only nationally recognized work college with a student-managed work program wherein students are responsible for the administration of the program including resource allocation, policy formulation, as well as direct supervision of their fellow students.

All resident students are required to work a minimum of 160 hours each semester in partnership with faculty and staff to help provide virtually all services essential to college operations. Non-residents may petition for approval to participate in the work program and if approved are held to the same requirements as a resident student.
