Distance Education – Pros and Cons:
Distance learning (also known as distance
education, online education, home study,
correspondence courses) has become a very popular study
option in recent years. The teaching principles
for distance learning have been perfected and
proven effective. This has resulted in
qualifications achieved via distance learning
being respected in the employment market. Many
educational institutions are now recognizing
this and offering courses that do not require
students to attend in person. You can even
complete an accredited doctoral program online
or via distance learning.
The course information is most often provided
through print or electronic media with support
from tutors. Interaction with other students can
often be facilitated through online
communication such as discussion groups or
instant messaging. Occasionally, students might
be required to attend tutorials or workshops in
the institution they are enrolled in. They may
also need to sit examinations there.
Advantages of distance learning:
• You can schedule your study around your family
and work commitments.
• The study is self-paced and is completed at
your own speed. This gives you the freedom to
skip over material you may already be familiar
with and concentrate more on anything you are
having difficulty with.
• You are often given one –to-one attention from
your assigned tutors which you are not always
guaranteed in a classroom setting.
• Your geographic location is not a problem -
you can receive a qualification from an
educational institution on the other side of the
country or even in a different country.
• Students with physical or learning
disabilities often benefit greatly by distance
learning.
• You will not have to worry about loss of
earnings, and you do not have to spend time or
money on traveling to school.
Disadvantages of distance learning:
• It can be difficult to motivate yourself
without the physical presence of classmates.
• It can be hard to find the energy to study if
you are also juggling work and family life.
• It is easy to feel isolated when studying by
distance learning, particularly if you find
aspects of the course challenging.
• As communication with your tutors is done by
e-mail, you may not always get immediate answers
to any queries you might have.
Tips for distance learning:
• The key to success in distance learning is
discipline. Examine your routine and identify
times when you will be able to study. Try not to
allow any other activity to intrude on your
study time.
• Examine the course material carefully once you
receive it. Break it down into manageable chunks
for studying according to your own schedule.
This will help you not to feel overwhelmed.
• Make sure that your family understand and
respect your need for peaceful study time. Their
encouragement can prove great motivation.
• Be as organized as possible. As you are
working through the course, keep detailed notes
that will make revising for exams easier.
Develop a system of filing your notes so that
information can be easily located.
• Combat any feelings of isolation by ensuring
that you are actively involved in any online
communication offered by your institution such
as chat rooms or message boards. Knowing others
are facing the same challenges can be very
comforting.
• Ensure that you are capable of performing any
tasks required on your computer. For example,
you will need to be able to use e-mail
effectively or download and install new
software.
• Do not be afraid to ask for clarification on
anything that you do not understand. Although
you may not get a response from your tutor
straight away, posting your query on message
boards may result in advice from your fellow
students. Good communication is crucial for
success in distance learning so ensure that your
queries are always clear and concise.
• Make sure that you are aware of any student
services available to you as a distance learning
student. For example, even if you are too far
from the library of the institution you are
studying with, they may be able to arrange for
you to have borrowing rights at libraries closer
to you. You may also be able to avail of
technical support, either online or via
telephone.
• Ensure that you keep up with your coursework
throughout the program. If you do not adhere to
the study schedule you set for yourself you
could find yourself swamped with work at the end
of the semester. This is stressful and could
impact negatively on your results.
