Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning (TRU-OL), is one of Canada’s leading distance education providers. TRU-OL delivers over 400 individual courses and more than 57 programs through accessible and varied learning options that can be taken anytime and at an individually-determined pace. Open Learning offers fully recognized university courses and programs through a variety of flexible formats including: print-based, web-based and in-person as a lab, clinical, workshop or fieldwork.

TRU-OL offers a flexible format of open learning including continuous enrolment, minimal admission requirements, the ability to transfer credits to and from other institutions, the ability to gain credits for knowledge gained through previous work experience and the opportunity for diploma graduates to ladder credits directly into TRU-OL degree programs which allows them to complete a degree and diploma at the same time, at a lower cost.

Students who complete a TRU certificate, diploma or degree program through Open Learning will receive a TRU credential that is fully recognized by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), of which TRU is a member. The Open Learning division of TRU, which helped found the Canadian Virtual University, operates in collaboration with BCCampus and other educational institutions as well as professional, industry and business associations.
