What is open learning? Open Learning is an independent approach to education offering students flexibility and choice regarding how, when and where they learn. Program and course admission have few geographical and academic restrictions and most programs have low residency requirements. At TRU-OL enrolment is continuous so students can enrol in courses and programs at anytime, from anywhere. Once enrolled, courses can be completed online and by distance. In addition, Open Learning acknowledges students work experience, past education and training through credit transfer, educational laddering and prior learning assessment and recognition. How can my informal learning, such as my work experience, help me in my studies? Through Open Learning, a prospective students' lifestyle and livelihood may contribute to the learning process. Prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR) can help award credit for knowledge achieved through work and life experience. Once a formal application for transfer credit and program admission is made, advisors will develop a program plan and discuss whether or not PLAR is a suitable choice for the student's academic goals. Our History: TRU-OL was created in April 2005, when the Government of British Columbia officially launched BC’s newest university, Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops, BC. TRU was created as a result of the Government granting full university status to the former University College of the Cariboo (UCC), which was founded in 1970 as a community college and then became a degree granting institution in 1989. As part of the creation of TRU, all courses and programs of the former British Columbia Open University (BCOU) also became part of the new university, under the Open Learning Division. The BCOU, a division of the Open Learning Agency, a non-profit accredited institution funded by the provincial government, was founded in 1978 to offer access to post-secondary distance education. On July 1, 2007, all TRU, Open Learning operations relocated from Burnaby to the BC Centre for Open Learning located on the main TRU campus in Kamloops.
