CERTESL is an award-winning independent study program designed and delivered by the Extension Division at Saskatoon's University of Saskatchewan, a respected presence in distance education and online learning. Accredited by TESL Canada, SCENES and TESL Ontario, and recognized by other professional associations of ESL teachers in Canada, the CERTESL program is highly regarded for the quality of TESOL training it provides to current and prospective teachers of the English language.

Both native and non-native speakers of English are welcome in CERTESL provided they have graduated from high school with appropriate English course credits. Applicants must also write a short essay to demonstrate that they have adequate formal English skills. Non-native speakers must also demonstrate English proficiency equivalent to at least 550 in the paper-based TOEFL (213 computer-based) or another recognized test of English language skill, or have completed either three years of high school in English or at least 18 credits of postsecondary education using English as the medium of instruction. Non-native speakers whose English is below the required 550 TOEFL level but above 500 TOEFL (or the equivalent in another recognized test of English skills) are welcome to check out our two-course TEFL certificate.
