Computer-based Training:
Computer-based Training (CBT) is a method of using computers to train personnel in any location on almost any subject. The computer is the primary educational tool as opposed to instructor-led courses. Students use their computers to execute special training programs which most often relate to their occupation. CBT is particularly effective in training people to use new software applications because the software can be integrated with the training program to allow for an interactive learning experience that allows the student to practice as they learn. Many PC applications now come with some form of CBT, usually called a tutorial. CBT encompasses E-learning which is the term used for CBT that is provided either on the internet or on a company's internal network. This is often referred to as web-based training (WBT).

CBT courses are also delivered via CD-ROM. Online live classes are another method of course delivery. Individuals may choose to complete a CBT course to improve their skills to make them more attractive to future employers or improve their chances of promotion in their current job. Companies may choose to incorporate CBT into their training plan for employees as it may prove a much more cost-effective option than instructor-led training. Many companies that produce CBT material can tailor products to meet a company's specific needs i.e. training in their proprietary software. Educational institutions may offer some of their programs online via E-learning which means that students can achieve a qualification regardless of their physical location.

What are the advantages of CBT?
The main advantage of CBT is that it allows the student to work through courses at their own pace. They do not need to waste time and money traveling to a training location and they can schedule their studies around their own commitments. Studies have shown that students learn material significantly faster via CBT than via traditional methods which is due to the high levels of interaction and simulated environments that CBT programs allow. Students also retain more information which may be a result of being able to review material as many times as is necessary. Web-based training may prove even more convenient than CD-ROM programs for a number of reasons. There is no need for the distribution of physical materials so accessing the course content can be immediate. In addition, the content can be easily updated. For an educational institution that offers web-based training, it can be extremely easy to monitor the students' attendance and performance as well as tracking their results as it can all be recorded online.

Are there any disadvantages to CBT?
Some people find that self study does not suit their style of learning and the lack of human contact can prove an impediment to them because they need a greater level of instruction. In this case, web-based learning may prove a better option than CD-ROM CBT because students can use e-mail, message boards or chat rooms to communicate and to address any difficulties that they may be experiencing. Another drawback with web-based learning in particular is the lack of multimedia. Most WBT courses are comprised only of text and graphics and lacking the audio and video elements which can be very powerful learning tools. However, as broadband technology continues to improve, this issue should be addressed.

What can I learn via CBT?
There is no limit to the subjects you can learn via CBT. However, the area of Information Technology and especially IT certification are particularly suited to the CBT approach. Many CBT certification courses are developed in partnership with companies such as Microsoft, Oracle and Cisco and so you can be confident that you are receiving a high quality of education and that you will pass the certification tests with ease. You can complete CBT courses covering Microsoft Certification that include MCSE, MCSA, MCDBA among others. Cisco CBT courses are available for CCNA, CCMP, CCDA certifications among others.

Other popular areas of IT training where CBT is used extensively include IT Security Training, Linux Software, Unix and Desktop Support Training. If you are interested in a career in web design or graphic design, you can learn to use Macromedia and Adobe applications via CBT such as Flash, Dreamweaver, Premiere Pro and Cold Fusion. CBT courses in software products such as Microsoft Office Suite and other typical business or accounting applications are also available. In fact, all kinds of corporate training can be carried out via CBT including soft skills such as time management and business etiquette.

Accreditation:
If you choose to complete a program of study with an educational institution via CBT, you should ensure that the course that you select is an accredited one. This guarantees that you are receiving a high quality of education that will be recognized by employers within the field. There are six regional accrediting bodies within the US. You should also check if the relevant industry accrediting body recognizes the qualification. If you are unsure, contact the school directly to ask.
