Online Civil Engineering Degree Program - Benefits of
studying online:
Online civil engineering programs are now
recognized and highly respected by employers.
Completing a civil engineering degree via online
learning offers many advantages. You have the
freedom to select the program that best suits
your personal needs and career goals from
educational institutions around the world.
Your location is not an obstacle to the quality
of education available to you. You can schedule
your study around your current employment or
family commitments. This means it is not
necessary for you to make any financial
sacrifices while you further your education.
Your study is self-paced which means that you
can devote more time to studying unfamiliar
areas while skipping material you may find
easier to understand. Online learning is also an
excellent option for anyone with physical or
learning disabilities.
Choosing a program:
Civil engineering is the branch of engineering
that deals with the design and construction of a
wide range of things, from buildings, bridges
and roads to sewage or water systems. It aims to
improve and protect the environment in which we
live. Online civil engineering programs provide
grounding in the fundamental principles of
engineering which graduates will use to solve
real-world problems. You will receive specific
knowledge in mathematics, science, technology,
business and project management skills relevant
to civil engineering.
Within an online civil engineering program, you
can choose to specialize in the following
sub-disciplines: Environmental Engineering;
Surveying; Structural Engineering; Geotechnical
Engineering; Water Resources Engineering;
Coastal Engineering and Materials Engineering
among others. You will also receive training in
computer software specific to the field of civil
engineering.
What is involved:
A traditional campus-based civil engineering
degree takes four or five years to complete.
However, the length of time required to complete
an online civil engineering qualification varies
widely between educational institutions. Some
require that you adhere to a specific schedule
when completing modules. Others allow you to
work completely at your own pace until you have
completed the program.
Generally, your lectures, assignments and
required reading are available for you to
download from the school website at your own
convenience. You may also have access to
videotaped lectures or web-based classes. You
are usually assigned a tutor who can advise you
directly on any queries or concerns you have.
You can interact with your fellow students via
the use of message boards or instant messaging.
Accreditation:
Accreditation is the review of an educational
institution or a particular program by
accrediting bodies. You should always ensure
that the program you select is accredited by the
relevant regional and / or professional
accrediting body. By choosing an accredited
program, you can be assured of a high quality of
education which will be highly regarded whether
you are seeking new employment or promotion.
There are six regional accrediting bodies in the
US. The Accreditation Board for Engineering &
Technology (ABET) is the recognized accrediting
body for engineering, technology, computing and
applied science programs including online civil
engineering programs. If you are not sure of the
status of your selected program, you should
contact the educational institute directly to
confirm this. As accreditation is generally only
granted for a certain period of time, you should
ask them how long they have been accredited for
and when the program is next scheduled for
review.
Career Options:
Graduates of online civil engineering programs
can find employment in professional and
technical positions within the construction,
surveying, consulting engineering among others.
Civil engineers work in both the public and
private sectors and for a wide range of
companies, organizations or individuals. They
may also find work as teachers or lecturers.
