Doing an Online Engineering Degree Program - Benefits of
studying online:
Completing an engineering degree via online
learning can prove an excellent option for many
people. Online degrees are now highly respected
and recognized by potential employers. You can
schedule your study around your existing family
or work commitments. This means that you can
continue in your current job without any impact
on your financial situation. Online learning
gives you the opportunity to select a program
which best suits your individual needs and
career goals without geographic location being
an issue. This is a particular advantage when
studying engineering as there are so many
subjects you can specialize in. Self-paced
learning means that you can skip material you
are already familiar with while spending more
time on areas that you need to devote more time
to.
Choosing a program:
Engineering can be defined as the application of
science to practical purposes. There are
numerous fields within engineering that you can
specialize in. When selecting an online
engineering degree, you first need to decide
whether you require a broad engineering
background or whether you want to select a
specialization from the beginning. The six main
areas of engineering are Civil Engineering;
Chemical Engineering; Electrical Engineering;
Industrial Engineering; Materials Engineering
and Mechanical Engineering.
Within these
branches, you can choose to specialize further.
For example, areas of specialization include
Biomedical Engineering; Computer or Software
Engineering; Environmental Engineering; Nuclear
Engineering; Structural Engineering among many
others. Whatever type of online engineering
degree you choose to complete, you will receive
specific knowledge in mathematics, science,
technology, business and project management
skills. You will also be trained in computer
software specific to the engineering or
construction industry.
A Bachelors degree is
required for almost all entry-level engineering
positions. However, there are many online
engineering programs available at graduate level
which will further enhance your career
prospects.
What is involved:
The length of time required to complete an
online engineering qualification varies widely
between educational institutions. Some schools
allow you to work completely at your own pace
while others require that you complete modules
according to stricter guidelines. You generally
download your lectures, assignments and required
readings from the school website for you to
study at your own pace. A tutor will usually be
assigned to you and you can address any queries
or problems to them. Interaction with your
fellow students is often facilitated via the use
of message boards or instant messaging. You may
also be required to collaborate on projects
while overcoming the challenge of different
geographic locations.
Accreditation:
When choosing a program, you should always
ensure that it is an accredited one.
Accreditation is the review of an educational
institution or a particular program by
accrediting bodies. They ensure that high
standards are maintained in all areas. By
selecting an accredited program, you can be sure
that you are receiving a high quality of
education which will be highly regarded when
seeking employment or promotion. Schools and
programs can be accredited by a regional and /
or a professional accrediting body.
There are
six regional accrediting agencies in the US. If
it is unclear whether your chosen program is
accredited, you should call the educational
institute directly to enquire whether they are
accredited by the relevant regional agency and /
or the relevant professional agency. You should
also ask them to confirm how long they have been
accredited for and when their next review is
due.
The Accreditation Board for Engineering &
Technology (ABET) is the recognized accrediting
body for engineering, technology, computing and
applied science programs. There are currently
approximately 2,800 programs in about 600
educational institutions in the US accredited by
ABET.
Career Options:
There is a very wide variety of career options
open to graduates of online engineering degrees.
Mechanical engineers develop new machines or
enhance the efficiency of current systems.
Computer engineers design hardware and software
systems. Civil engineers design a range of
things from buildings, bridges and roads to
sewage or water systems. They may also work as
project managers e.g. overseeing a construction
site. Biomedical engineers work on finding and
developing new medicines. Electrical engineers
design electrical systems for homes or other
buildings. All engineering graduates could also
follow careers in teaching.
