Doing an online graduate course - Benefits of
studying online:
Accredited online graduate programs are now
gaining more recognition and acceptance in the
employment market. Many graduate schools who
offer face-to-face graduate programs are now
also providing online graduate programs for
students who cannot attend a full-time course
for any reason. You can also choose to complete
an online graduate program with a graduate
school that is solely based online. The majority
of people who choose to complete a graduate
program are employed and so an online course
could be the best option for them.
Studying online allows you to schedule your
study around your family or work commitments
without having to sacrifice your lifestyle or
income. It also allows students who are already
familiar with certain aspects of the course to
skip ahead and devote extra time to other
subjects as required. Your geographic location
is not important as all of your interaction with
your lecturers or classmates will be online.
Choosing a course:
You can choose to do a Graduate / Masters
program online once you have completed a
Bachelor’s or Undergraduate degree. You can
choose to study for a PhD or Doctoral
qualification online also which tend to be more
research-oriented. While it is possible to gain
an online graduate qualification in most fields,
the most popular areas for graduate programs are
Business, Engineering, Education, Law, Health
Sciences and Information Technology.
When choosing a course, your primary focus will
naturally be on the subjects covered and how
they relate to your career goals and objectives.
You may also want to specialize in a particular
area. For example, graduates of law school may
have specialized in Criminal Law, Family Law or
Taxation. Students completing an MBA (Masters of
Business Administration) can choose to
specialize in areas such as Accounting, Human
Resources or Marketing.
However, outside of the academic considerations,
you should also ensure that you are aware of all
the relevant information relating to areas such
as tuition fees, student services available to
you, technical support etc.
What is involved:
The length of time required to complete a
graduate program online varies widely for each
institution. A course can take months or years
complete and the level of specialization you
wish to achieve is also a factor. Some
educational institutions allow you to complete
the program completely at your own pace whereas
others require that you adhere to more rigid
guidelines. Completing a doctoral program can
take between two and four years online. When
studying online, you usually download lecture
notes and assignments from the school’s website.
Alternatively, lectures can be supplied via
streaming audio or web conferences. You are
often expected to contribute to online
discussions with your classmates on various
topics. If you are completing an online doctoral
program, you will be expected to carry out
independent research in addition to coursework.
You will also be expected to write a
dissertation or thesis.
Accreditation:
When choosing an online graduate course, you
need to ensure that it is accredited. This means
that the program has been evaluated against
existing standards to ensure a high quality of
education. Accredited courses will also give you
a competitive edge in the jobs market. If you
are unsure whether the course you are
considering is accredited, you should contact
the educational institution directly and ask.
You should also ask when the accreditation was
granted and when the school is due for their
next review.
There are regional and national agencies
involved in the accreditation process. For
example, the accrediting body for MBA programs
is The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools
of Business (AACSB). However, there are also six
regional accrediting agencies in the US that
your graduate program could be accredited by.
The reputation of the educational institute that
awards your degree will also have a bearing on
your job prospects after graduation. Many
accredited graduate programs, particularly in
fields such as law or business or the health
professions, are given rankings from
institutions such as US News and World Report
magazine to help potential students make
informed choices about the best program for
their needs. The rankings are based on various
criteria which can include faculty resources,
starting salaries for graduates, peer assessment
etc.
Career Options:
Completing an online graduate program can
greatly improve your earning potential and can
advance your current career. It may also help
you to specialize within the field you currently
work in. Alternatively, you may want to retrain
in preparation for a complete career change.
Doctoral programs prepare people for
research-oriented careers, particularly within
academia. A Ph.D is essential for anyone who
wants to be a professor and highly recommended
for anyone who wants to be considered for a
teaching position in third level institutions.
These qualifications will certainly give you a
competitive edge with potential employers.
