Online Interior Design Courses - Career Opportunities

Gaining an Interior Design Degree and License:
An Interior Designer specializes in designing architectural interiors and their furnishings. Interior designers are qualified by education and experience to develop the purpose and quality of interior spaces. A bachelor’s degree is recommended to start off your career in Interior Design.

Online degrees are available in many universities and online colleges, and some private schools. Online / Distance education makes your interior design degree achievable from the comfort of your own home. It is a perfect way to study for people with jobs, children, disabilities, or other reasons that make it difficult to go to a campus classroom. In addition, it is a cost effective method of education. To tie in with your own personal time constraints, many universities offer modular Interior Design Degree Programs, so you can complete each module at your own pace.

In 24 States you must be licensed before practicing. Graduates usually enter their first job as an apprentice for the first 1 – 3 years. The primary purpose of an apprenticeship or internship is to gain experience while continuing to learn more about the field, before taking the national licensing exam.

Employers in states that do not require licensing often require a job candidate to have passed the exam. The license is also required for membership to interior design organizations. Licensing is administered by The National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ). As a prerequisite to sitting the exam you must first have 6 years combined education / work experience in interior design. The certification exam is in three parts. Two multiple choice exams, and one practicum exam. The first multiple exam covers the principles and practices of Interior design, programming, schematic design and design development. The second multiple choice examination covers, contract documents and administration. Each exam has 125 questions some of which are unscored. The practicum section covers schematics and design.

Candidates who have passed the exam can take the title Licensed / Certified / Registered Interior Designer. Continuing education is required to maintain your licensure.
