Accounting - What is involved:
Accounting (accountancy) professionals known as accountants are responsible for interpreting financial activity within and outside their organization. Accountants in general create financial reports that are used by management, regulators and shareholders. Through distance learning you can study for your accountancy exams at your own pace. There are several professional bodies of accountants which allow their members to certify by distance education.
Legally practicing accountants are Certified Public Accounts (CPAs), other non statutory accountants can be Certified Internal Auditors (CIAs), Certified Management Accountants (CMAs) and Accredited Business Accountants (ABAs). The difference between CPAs and other accountants is legal status and the types of services provided. An individual may earn one or more of the above titles. Uncertified individuals may perform accounting work by working under the supervision of a certified accountant on an internship. A CPA is licensed by the state that he/she practices in. Once you have passed your CPA exam you can use the CPA title to indicate your qualification level.
Typical duties of a CPA include:
Providing auditing services to the public, Tax and litigation support, Financial advisory services.
How to Qualify:
There are several subcategories of accounts. You
should decide which path you wish to go down
before signing up to any course. The main
accountancy divisions are as follows:
To qualify as a CPA you must pass the Uniform
Certified Public Accountant exam. This exam is
maintained by the American Institute of
Certified Public Accountants (AICPA)
1) Decide in which state you wish
to practice and apply to that jurisdiction.
Requirements vary from state to state.
2) Review some of the schools
offering online CPA courses. Ensure you can fit
the modules around your schedule. Ensure your
school is an accredited school.
3) Apply to take the exam. If you
wish to apply in one of the following states you
should call CPAES at 1-800-CPA-EXAM:
Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida,
Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas,
Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan,
Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New
Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York,
Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island,
South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont,
Virginia and Wisconsin.

Candidates for any other state should contact
NASBA to find out contact details for their
local accountancy board.
4) Complete Application forms and
pay fees. First time candidates must submit
application forms along with required
documentation. As the rules vary by jurisdiction
follow the information provided by your local
board. The initial application process takes six
to eight weeks. Re examination candidates are
processed in a much shorter time.
5) Schedule an exam. Once you
application has bee approved you will receive a
notification for each exam you have applied to
take. Once you receive this notification it is
advisable to schedule your exam as soon as
possible as you will only have a limited time in
which to take your exam.
