Doing an Online Masters Program - Benefits of
studying online:
For many people, their main incentive for
completing a Masters program is to help them to
advance further in their chosen career.
Completing a Masters program online has become
an extremely viable option. Because online
courses can be completed at your own speed and
study can be scheduled around your current
commitments, you do not need to leave your
current job. This means that you do not have to
make any financial sacrifices. Self-paced study
also means that you can skip over material you
may already be familiar with while devoting more
time to areas you may find more challenging.
Another advantage of online education is that
you can choose a high-quality accredited course
regardless of your geographic location. Your
costs are further reduced by the fact that you
do not have to commute.
Choosing a course:
The online Masters program that you choose will
depend largely on your career goals and the
areas in which you wish to specialize. There are
two types of online Masters degrees offered by
third level educational institutions. A Master
of Arts (MA) qualification can be achieved in
the fields of social sciences, business and some
health industries.
The Masters in Business
Administration (MBA) is one of the most
prestigious and well-known qualifications in
this category. MBA students can choose to
specialize in areas such as Business Management;
Finance; Human Resources Management; Information
Systems and Marketing.
An MA in Education can
include such specializations as Early Childhood
Education; Educational Administration;
Curriculum and Instruction; Adult Education and
Special Education. A Master of Public
Administration incorporates specializations
including Sociology; Legal Studies; Criminal
Justice; Political Science and Homeland
Security. A Master of Sciences (MS)
qualification can be achieved in the Sciences.
Popular choices in this area include Master of
Science in Nursing; Master of Science in
Psychology and Master of Science in Computer
Information Systems. Online Masters degrees in
the field of Engineering can be achieved in
areas such as Civil Engineering; Electrical
Engineering; Mechanical Engineering and
Environmental Engineering.
What is involved:
When completing a Masters program online, your
lectures and assignments are usually made
available for you to download from the website
of the educational institution you are enrolled
with. Alternatively, you can access lectures via
streaming audio or web conference. Often you are
expected to interact with your classmates by
contributing to online discussions or by
collaborating on projects if required.
The
length of time required to complete an online
Masters degree varies widely for each school or
university.
Some intensive courses can be completed within
months. However, most Masters programs take one
or two years to complete. Some schools are happy
to allow you to complete the course at your own
pace regardless of how long it takes. However,
others expect you to adhere to more rigid
guidelines.
Accreditation:
Before committing your time and money you should
ensure that the course you select is an
accredited one. Accredited programs have been
evaluated to ensure that they meet high
standards of education. Many unaccredited
courses are not recognized by universities or by
employers as they cannot be sure that you have
received an adequate level of education. If you
are unsure whether the program you are
interested in is accredited, you should contact
the admissions office of the educational
institution directly to ask. You should also ask
when the accreditation was granted and when the
school is due for their next review.
There are
six regional accrediting agencies in the US that
your online Masters degree could be accredited
by. Different disciplines can also have their
own accrediting agencies. For example, a Master
of Science in Nursing can be accredited by the
Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
which is a national, autonomous accreditation
agency. Similarly, the accrediting body for
Masters in Business Administration (MBA) is The
Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of
Business (AACSB).
Career Options:
The majority of people who choose to complete
online Masters courses are in fulltime
employment. For many, career advancement is
their primary reason to further their education
past the level of a Bachelors degree. A Masters
degree allows you to specialize in certain areas
and then apply these skills and knowledge in the
workplace.
On completion of your online Masters program,
you may be eligible for promotion to managerial
positions due to your additional leadership and
communication skills. You will also be able to
demonstrate the specialized knowledge gained in
your Masters degree in the workplace leading to
greater chances of promotion. You will be able
to command a much higher salary than previously.
You will also have the option to continue to
doctoral studies if you wish.
