Doing an Online MBA:
A Masters in Business Administration (MBA) is
considered to be one of the most prestigious
qualifications you can achieve. It is a
postgraduate business degree that teaches
business and management principles and how they
can be applied. Online learning has gained
increased recognition and respect in the
employment market in recent years. In response
to that, many business schools who offer
face-to-face MBA programs are now also providing
the opportunity to earn your MBA online.
Benefits of studying online:
You may choose to study online if you are unable
to attend full-time course in person. For
example, your geographical location or a
physical or learning disability could cause you
problems. You may also feel that you are not
best suited to the traditional classroom
setting. The majority of people who choose to
complete an MBA program are employed, and so an
online program offers many benefits. The primary
advantage of online study is that it is
self-paced. If you are already familiar with
certain subjects, you can skip ahead and spend
more time on material that you may be having
difficulty with. You can schedule your study
time around your family and work commitments and
your earning ability is not affected.
Choosing an MBA course:
You can choose to do a general MBA which gives
you an education on general business and
management. This knowledge will prove valuable
regardless of what career path you follow after
graduating. However, depending on your own
career goals or the requirements of your current
position you may decide to concentrate on
particular disciplines.
For example, some of
most popular areas of specialization include
Business Management; Finance; Human Resources
Management; Information Systems and Marketing.
You can also choose subjects such as E-business;
Entrepreneurship; Risk Management and Economics.
You should ensure that you are clear on what
combination of subjects are available to you. If
cost is a factor for you, you should ask your
employer whether they would contribute to some
or all of your tuition fees before you make a
decision.
What is involved:
The length of time required to complete an
online MBA can vary widely between educational
institutions. An intensive course can be
finished in as little as nine months whereas
other online programs can take up to four years.
Whether you choose to specialize in any area
will impact on the length of time it takes also.
You will download lectures, required readings
and assignments to study at your own pace.
Students are usually required to participate in
online discussion groups also. You will need to
allow an average of twenty hours per week to
study.
Accreditation:
Before committing your time and money to an MBA
program, it is essential to make sure that it is
accredited. Accreditation is the review of an
educational institution or a course by
accrediting bodies. They review the course
content, the performance of the teaching
faculty, recruiting practices etc and ensure
that high standards are maintained in all areas.
If your MBA is from an unaccredited institution,
you may not be eligible for certain jobs. By
choosing an accredited course, you can be
confident that the education you receive is of a
high standard and will be recognized as such
when seeking employment or promotion. Schools
and programs can be accredited by a regional and
/ or a professional accrediting body.
There are
six regional accrediting agencies that grant
this recognition for MBA programs. Accreditation
from the Association to Advance Collegiate
Schools of Business (AACSB International) is
considered the highest standard of accreditation
in the US. Only 25% of US business schools
achieve this accreditation. An MBA from one of
these institutions will be highly regarded in
the workplace following graduation.
If you are
unsure whether your chosen program is
accredited, you should call the educational
institute directly and ask them. You should also
ask them to confirm the length of time they are
accredited for, as accreditation is often
granted only for a specific period of time.
Career Options:
Following graduation, you can use your newfound
skills and business knowledge to build on the
success you have already achieved in your field.
Many positions or promotion opportunities
require an MBA qualification. Graduates can also
go on to specialize in a particular area such as
finance, marketing, e-business, supply chain
management etc. It can also be the starting
point for launching your own business. Students
can also progress to earning a Doctor of
Business Administration (DBA) to further enhance
their career prospects and earning potential.
