Online Mechanical Engineering Degree Program - Benefits of
studying online:
Online degrees are now highly respected and
recognized in the workplace. There are many
advantages to completing a mechanical
engineering degree via online learning. A key
advantage is the freedom to schedule your study
around your work and family life. This means
that you do not need to make any financial or
lifestyle sacrifices while furthering your
education.
Online learning is an excellent
option for people with physical or learning
disabilities or those who feel that they are not
best suited to the traditional classroom
environment. Self-paced learning means that you
can skip material you are already familiar with
while spending more time on areas that you need
to devote more time to. Your location will not
prove an obstacle to your study. Online learning
gives you the opportunity to select a program
which best suits your individual needs and
career goals from educational institutions
around the world.
Choosing a program:
Mechanical engineers take the principles of
physics and apply them to the design,
manufacture and maintenance of mechanical
systems. These can include industrial machinery,
motor vehicles, aircraft, manufacturing plants
and medical devices. Mechanical engineering
degrees often also focus on the management of
people, resources and systems related to
mechanical engineering. There is a heavy focus
on the application of Computer Aided Design
(CAD) or other computer software specific to the
engineering or construction industries.
Core subjects of an online mechanical
engineering degree include the following:
Statics and Dynamics; Mechanism Design;
Engineering Design; Strength of Materials;
Drafting; Instrumentation and Measurement;
Manufacturing Technology among others. You will
receive specific knowledge in mathematics,
science, technology, business and project
management skills relevant to mechanical
engineering.
What is involved:
A mechanical engineering degree normally takes
about four years to complete. However, the
length of time required to complete an online
mechanical engineering qualification can vary
widely between educational institutions. Some
schools allow you to work completely at your own
pace until you have achieved your qualification.
Others require that you complete modules
according to a specific schedule.
Your lectures, assignments and required readings
are generally available on the school website
for you to access at your own convenience. You
will normally be assigned a tutor who will
advise you directly on any queries or concerns
you may have. Interaction with your fellow
students is often facilitated via the use of
message boards or instant messaging. You may
also be required to collaborate on projects
which require overcoming the challenge of
different geographic locations.
Accreditation:
Accreditation is the review of an educational
institution or a particular program by
accrediting bodies. Selecting an accredited
program, you can be confident that you are
receiving a high quality of education which will
be highly regarded when seeking employment or
promotion. Schools and programs can be
accredited by a regional and / or a professional
accrediting body. There are six regional
accrediting agencies in the US.
If it is unclear whether your chosen program is
accredited, you should call the educational
institute directly to enquire about their
status. You should also ask them to confirm how
long they have been accredited for and when
their next review is due. The Accreditation
Board for Engineering & Technology (ABET) is the
recognized accrediting body for engineering,
technology, computing and applied science
programs including online mechanical engineering
programs.
Career Options:
There is a very wide variety of career options
open to graduates of online engineering degrees.
Mechanical engineers develop new machines or
enhance the efficiency of current systems. You
can find employment as a planner, manufacturing
engineer or project manager. You could also find
work as a mechanical engineering teacher or
lecturer. If you want to move on to further
education, you could proceed to a postgraduate
degree such as a Masters in Engineering.
