Doing an Online Science Degree Program - Benefits of
studying online:
Many quality educational institutions that offer
traditional campus-based programs are now
offering equivalent courses online, to meet the
growing market for online or distance education.
Online qualifications have
become increasingly more recognized and
respected in the employment marketplace.
Studying online provides many advantages over
attending a science course full-time. The primary
benefit is being able to schedule your study
time around your existing commitments. You can
continue to work full-time while you achieve
your degree, meaning that no financial
sacrifices are required. You can also choose the
course that best suits your individual needs
without needing to worry about geographic
location. The fact that your learning is
self-paced means that you can devote more time
to material you may be having difficulty with
while skipping sections you are familiar with.
Choosing a course:
The field of science offers a very diverse range
of career options. Selecting an online Science
degree depends largely on the area you would
like to specialize in. You can choose to do a
Bachelor's Degree in General Science which gives
you basic training in a broad range of science
subjects.
However, you can choose to complete degrees in
specializations including Physics, Biology,
Chemistry, Environmental Science, Agricultural
Science, Biotechnology and Veterinary Science.
Applied Science involves the application of
scientific principles to real-life problems.
Many of these degrees require that you study
elements of other related disciplines.
For example, if you are completing a Biology
degree, you will also need to study elements of
Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Completing a
Masters degree allows you to specialize further
and increase your skills and knowledge. For
example, graduates of Biology degrees may choose
to complete a Masters in Botany or Marine
Biology. Masters degrees have a much greater
focus on independent research.
What is involved:
The length of time required to complete an
online Science qualification can vary widely
between educational institutions. You can
complete an intensive course in as little as
nine months. However, other online programs can
take up to four years.
Some schools allow you to complete modules at
your own pace while others require that you
adhere to more rigid timelines. Online education
normally requires you to download lectures,
required readings and assignments to study at
your own pace. You are usually required to
interact with your fellow students via
participating in online discussion groups or
through collaboration on projects. You normally
have an assigned tutor who you can address any
queries or problems to.
Accreditation:
Accreditation is the review of an educational
institution or a course by accrediting bodies.
They ensure that high standards are maintained
in all areas through reviews of the course
content, the performance of the teaching
faculty, recruiting practices etc. By choosing
an accredited course, you can be confident that
the education you receive is of a high standard
and will be recognized as such when seeking
employment or promotion.
Schools and programs can be accredited by a
regional and / or a professional accrediting
body. There are six regional accrediting
agencies in the US. If you are unsure whether
your chosen program is accredited, you should
call the educational institute directly to
enquire whether they are accredited by the
relevant regional agency and / or the relevant
professional agency.
For example, courses in Microbiology can be
accredited by the American Academy of
Microbiology. Environmental Science degrees may
be accredited by the National Environment Health
Science & Protection Accreditation Council. You
should also ask them to confirm the length of
time they are accredited for, as accreditation
is often granted only for a specific period of
time.
Career Options:
There are an infinite number of career
possibilities for science graduates depending on
your area of specialization. For example,
chemistry graduates may have specialized in
areas as diverse as pharmaceutical chemistry or
forensic chemistry. Science graduates can work
as physicists, engineers or biotechnicians. You
can choose to work as a researcher, either in a
laboratory or an academic setting. Teaching is
also a career option regardless of your area of
expertise.
