The Interactive Design Institute:
The Interactive Design Institute was founded in 2004 to deliver practical art and design courses, online. All the courses we offer are on the UK National Qualifications Framework (NQF). This is the framework into which all qualifications that have been accredited by the approved UK regulatory bodies fit. Our online courses can be studied at home on a flexible basis. Students can choose to work at times which suit them, allowing them to fit their studies around work or family commitments.

Level 3 Diploma in Foundation Studies (Art and Design)
This is a comprehensive Art and Design Foundation course which is designed to develop personal creativity, problem solving and independent thought. This course is intended for those students who want to progress to degree level study at art college or university. Students undertaking the course can expect to develop an extensive portfolio of work in a wide range of media.

The course is divided into three stages and culminates in a specialist outcome, or personal project. The emphasis throughout is on visual research, drawing and sketchbook development aimed at generating expressive art and design ideas. Historical and contemporary studies form an integral part of this course, and students will be encouraged to develop critical awareness in relation to their own work and that of others.

The FoundatioOnline Education/ Distance Learningn Diploma in Art and Design is widely recognised as the standard entry qualification for degree level study at art colleges and universities throughout the United Kingdom. It is on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and is also included in the UCAS Tariff for entry to higher education. The points are:

Certification
This course leads to the award of the Level 3 Diploma in Foundation Studies from ABC Awards, one of the UK’s leading providers of accredited awards. The Diploma may be awarded at the level of pass, merit or distinction.

What’s included in the fee
The course fee includes unlimited online tuition and support, together with access to course materials and to a secure personal online studio, where you can upload and store images of your work and communicate with your tutor at any time.

All our courses are supported by comprehensive learning materials which provide step by step instructions for the completion of exercises and projects, together with suggestions for further study and information on artists, techniques and materials.

Entry Requirements:

Normally an three GCSE passes at grade C or above or equivalent, and at least one GCE A2 Level at grade E or above*. Mature students without formal qualifications are welcome to apply.

We are interested in all applicants who have commitment, and are determined to succeed, whatever their qualifications and previous experience. We do look for evidence of students having the potential to benefit from the course. although this may not necessarily be through prior experience in art and design. Creativity, an interest in making things and a desire to develop visual and problem solving skills are equally important.

All applications will be considered and will have an opportunity to show examples of previous creative work and proof of academic qualifications.

BA (hons) Graphic Design and Illustration

ThisOnline Education/ Distance Learning is a degree programme from the University of Hertfordshire which is designed to prepare students for a range of careers in the fields of graphic design and illustration. Over the course of the programme, students increasingly specialise in one of these two disciplines.

Throughout the course students gain experience in the use of a wide range of media and of software programmes associated with the field of study. As students progress through the course the emphasis increasingly is on project work, working within the constraints expected of a professional practitioner in the creative industries. Students will gain experience of working on live projects, and will develop their knowledge of design production. In doing so, they will benefit from shared experience with other students within the UK and worldwide, and from our collaboration with overseas partners.

The final part of the course is focused around the professional portfolio with an emphasis on professional standards of working and support from staff whose experience best matches student interests. It is intended to provide an experience from which students can emerge as creative designers able to work to professional standards.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants should normally have 240 tariff points from GCE A Levels or the equivalent including a qualification in an art related subject plus GCSE English at grade C. Applicants from outwith the UK and mature students without formal qualifications are also welcome and will be considered on their merits. Applicants will also have an opportunity to show examples of previous creative work and proof of academic qualifications.

BA (hons) Interior and Spatial Design

This is a degree programme from the University of Hertfordshire which is designed to prepare students for a range of careers in the fields of Interior and Spatial Design. The programme focuses on contemporary and future practices in interior and spatial design, including the use of new technologies, business skills and recognition of new corporate environments.

The degree incorporates design for commercial and domestic interiors, exhibition, retail interior, event venue, and corporate interior design.

The programme is designed to develop creative abilities and teach new skills. It also addresses the developing nature of the profession. It emphasises current work in lighting, furniture, and architecture as they are applied in spatial constructs of interiors, contemporary marketing and events staging. The staff team is drawn from nationally and internationally experienced designers who bring their commercial and professional interests directly into the student environment.

Course structure

The course has three levels, each of which consists of a combination of compulsory and optional modules totalling 120 credit points, and leads to the award of the BA (Hons). Students have the option of completing their studies entirely with the Interactive Design Institute, or of transferring to a UK university for part of their studies.

Certification

Completion of Level 1 leads to the award of the Certificate of Higher Education (Cert. HE), completion of Level 2 to the award of the Diploma of Higher Education (Dip. HE) and completion of Level 3 to the award of Bachelor of Arts (BA Hons) from the University of Hertfordshire*

*Please note: The certificate awarded to students studying with the Interactive Design Institute is exactly the same as that awarded to students attending the University of Hertfordshire.

Progression

The course is designed to develop a range of transferable skills, giving graduates the opportunity to pursue careers in the rapidly expanding creative industries worldwide, either as part of a design team, or as freelance designers. Successful graduates may also have the opportunity to go on to Masters level study at universities in the UK or elsewhere.

Graduate Transition Course (Pre Masters)

The Graduate Transition Course (Pre Masters) is a bridging course which prepares students for entry to postgraduate level study in Art and Design. The course is designed to develop personal visual creativity, problem solving and critical evaluation at an advanced level. This course is intended primarily for international student graduates who wish to progress to taught and research Masters programmes in Art and Design at art college or university in the UK. The course may also benefit graduates in other disciplines who wish to undertake postgraduate level study in Art and Design.

The emphasis throughout is on investigative drawing, media experimentation, creative development and visual and written communication. The theory and practice of Art and Design in an historical and contemporary context forms an integral part of the programme. Students will examine research methods and will be encouraged to engage in personal reflective practice throughout their studies. International students will have the opportunity to develop their English language skills within the context of studio based practice in Art and Design.

CertificationOnline Education/ Distance Learning

This course leads to the award of the University Diploma in International Studies (Art and Design) awarded by the University of Hertfordshire.

Progression

Successful completion of the course provides guaranteed entry to Masters courses at our partner universities in the UK.

Duration

The Graduate Transition Course can be studied flexibly over a period of between three and nine months.

Entry Requirements:

An honours degree or equivalent qualification in a related discipline. Applicants with degrees in other disciplines may also be considered for entry. Applicants with a lower qualification and relevant professional experience or with substantial professional experience alone will be considered on their individual merit. Applicants will also have an opportunity to show examples of previous creative work and proof of academic qualifications.

Masters Pathway leading to an MA in Design:
The Masters Pathway is a unique programme which is delivered flexibly online through a collaborative agreement between the Interactive Design Institute and the University of Hertfordshire, one of the UK’s leading new universities. The programme culminates in the award of MA in Design from the University of Hertfordshire. The Masters Pathway is designed to accommodate the needs of students with a wide range of qualifications and experience, and can be studied flexibly over four to eight semesters. The Masters Pathway is designed for UK, EU and International students.

The Masters Pathway provides you with the opportunity to develop your creative potential as a practitioner, and provides you with the professional and entrepreneurial skills to work in your chosen career field. The course combines both practical and theoretical elements, and allows students to develop higher level professional, research and entrepreneurial skills.

Masters Pathway course applications are welcomed from students who have completed a Bachelor's degree in Art and Design, as well those whose first degree is in a non-Art and Design related subject. Applications will also be considered from those without a first degree, but who can demonstrate relevant professional experience.
