Casentino Study Abroad Program of Tuscany, Italy
The Casentino Study Abroad Program of Tuscany is
based in a district called the Casentino, only
50 Km from Florence, the Casentino is little
known, even to the Italians themselves, and yet
it has been the seat of important events since
history began, its historical heritage, which is
manifest in its churches, castles and hill-tows
is vast if compared to that of the Chianti and
Siena. At the head of the valley is the source
of the Arno, the river of Florence, and on its
banks is the home of the Italian language,
culture and spirit.
The Casentino, called by many "The Valley
Enclosed" is instead quintessential Italy. The
culture which has moulded Tuscany as it is known
in history has been preserved here in a language
and in traditions long vanished elsewhere. The
seat of our Program is the elegant early 19th C.
Palazzo Ferri, a 3-storey stately home with
murals on ceilings and walls, located in the
heart of the town of Bibbiena, the major
cultural and economical center of the Casentino.
Palazzo Ferri boasts an English and Italian
library with a choice of books selected to
fulfil the needs of the academic program. In
addition, students will access Internet from all
computers. Our Institute assists students on an
individual basis, providing valuable support and
services. The staff consists of English speaking
Italian, British and American professionals who
bring to the program their experience
accumulated in years of practice in
international and cosmopolitan environments.
They will offer invaluable advice on cultural
differences, daily problems and travel.
Courses
The Program is designed to privilege the
humanities, business, political sciences, media
studies and Italian language. We put an emphasis
on cultural diversity, cross cultural
communication and other philosophical and
ethical issues. This method fulfils the needs of
the cultural mosaic which is modern Italy.
Courses follow a semester calendar with a
14-week fall session, a 14-week spring session,
and a 5-week summer session. Since all lessons
are in English, no prior knowledge of Italian is
required. The program offers a study abroad
program strictly adhering to the American
academic tradition. It brings together faculty
from prestigious colleges and universities
worldwide.
Several guest speakers coming from the world of
industry, politics and the entertainment will be
adding a broader dimension to the quality of
courses. Visits to factories and political
institutions will provide the students with a
deeper appreciation of their host society and
culture.
