Audio Engineering Career - Options
|
What it involves:
Audio, Broadcast and Sound Engineering
Technicians and Production Engineers operate a
variety of electronic equipment. They are
employed by radio stations, television networks,
recording studios, concert promoters or movie
production houses. College training in broadcast
technology and electronics gives you the best
foundation for a career, but you will also need
a good knowledge of equipment, play an
instrument, produce CD’s and have contacts in
the industry to succeed. Most sound engineers
work for them selves so you must be proactive in
developing your skills in all of the above.
Attending an accredited audio school is a good
way to learn the technical skills involved.
Working as an intern at a commercial studio is
another way to build on your skills and make key
contacts.
Production Engineers are sound engineers who
work at radio stations. They typically work with
music beds, sound effect libraries, mutli-track
mix boards and multiple format recording
systems.
Audio and video equipment technicians are
responsible for setting up and operating audio
and video equipment. They would typically work
with video screens, sound speakers, microphones,
projectors and recording equipment. They would
work at sports events, concerts, conferences and
presentations. Occasionally they would also
operate lighting systems.
Broadcast technicians operate equipment that
manages signal strength for radio or television
broadcasts. They would be responsible for the
clarity and range of sound and color.
Audio engineering technicians operate equipment
to record, synchronize, mix and recreate sound
effects in recording studios or movie and video
production houses.
Radio operators mainly receive and transmit
communications using a variety of tools. These
workers also repair equipment, using such
devices as electronic testing equipment, hand
tools, and power tools. One of their major
duties is to help to maintain communication
systems in good condition.
Jobs & Certification:
In a lot of industries Audio Engineers work on a
freelance basis. Reputation and character are
important in getting jobs. Most large stations
only hire audio technicians with experience so
it is important to get some experience either by
participating in college radio, setting up your
own recording studio and recording your friends
or interning in a commercial studio.
Licensing
is not required for audio technicians but The
Society of Broadcast Engineers offer a
certification program. This certification is
recognized as a mark of competence and
experience by the industry. To get certification
candidates are required to take an exam. |
