DIPLOMA OF GRAPHIC DESIGN & DIGITAL MEDIA (1 Year or equivalent Part-time)
This course area will open up opportunities for individuals, intent on working in the graphics and multimedia industry. innovative and provides a balance in skills based education with applied creative direction. It will provide students with the opportunity not only to develop their skills in typography, print and editorial design, branding and identity, information design, packaging, software usage, web design, image manipulation, interface design, interactive animation and digital video production but to set the benchmark for innovation and creative difference. Students will learn and comprehensively cover the Adobe CS3 software programs of Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat and InDesign, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash & Final Cut Pro. The program culminates with the development of a professional quality design portfolio with both digital and paper based components.
DRAWING & MIXED MEDIA
Drawing & Mixed Media concentrates on teaching fundamental methods and alternative approaches in drawing. The aim is to help students develop skills, increase vocabulary of drawing approaches and give them guidance in harnessing and extending their own individual tendencies. Students will work from life models and elements both within the studio and outside and will explore different wet and dry media, including biro, charcoal, graphite, chalk pastel, ink, collage, paint, photography and more.
SCULPTURE & INSTALLATION
Students will learn to develop fundamental methods and techniques in sculpture, including modelling in clay and plaster. Ways to
use materials and traditional and alternative ideas about form, scale, shape, rhythm and dynamic will also be explored. Additionally, students will learn about established sculptors and new directions in sculpture today. Confident students will be able to extend their ideas using found materials and other media. Students own individual approach and pre-existing ideas will be encouraged and supported. The course is suitable for beginners and upwards and those preparing folio work.
STUDIO DEVELOPMENT
Students consolidate and extend their individual studio work from Studio Art/ Studio Practice with individual and group tutorials. Each week a small group of students (approximately three) discuss their work with a lecturer in a group tutorial. All students must attend these sessions. After the group tutorial the lecturer will give individual tutorials. Each student will be given an appointment time and will have approximately four individual tutorials
a semester.
GALLERIES & EXHIBITING PRACTICE / UNDERSTANDING THE ARTWORLD
This subject introduces students to the professional practice of the artist in the art world. It will look at different types of contemporary and traditional commercial, public and artist run galleries within Melbourne (examining them within context of other galleries in Australia and overseas). The subject will help individual students locate where their work or approach might be best suited in the artworld. It will help them develop career strategies, how to approach galleries, gallery representation, writing exhibition proposals and artist statements, prizes and awards, developing CV’s, photographing and digitally documenting work. The program will also include regular gallery visits and talks by gallery directors and critics.
