Sports & Outdoors Activities
A keystone in the programme of Collège Northside is its commitment to outdoors pursuits and sports. Two days a week, Thursdays and Fridays, are spent in their entirety on sports and activities, throughout the year. The aim of the programme is to encourage participation, while at the same time providing the students with
new and exciting sporting and outdoor experiences. The province of Québec is an ideal location to take advantage of the outdoors and all that it offers. The very first week is spent on a white water rafting expedition on one of Québec's finest rivers, such as the Rivière Gatineau or the Rivière Rouge. Soon after that, the students are initiated to canoe-camping, water skiing and wakeboarding, horse-riding, rock-climbing, mountain biking etc. All expeditions include over night camping or stays in a refuge (a rustic but heated cabin) once the nights get colder. These activities start again as soon as the Spring weather returns in the third term and culminate with a larger trip, such as whale watching in Eastern Québec. The Winter is taken up by the Ski Programme.
The key notion in our programme is that sports are not only competitive. Although a competitive student will find challenges (we will register him/her in outside teams if he/she desires), the average student is encouraged to participate in and enjoy the sport at his/her level of ability. Too many teenagers with ability and drive have been put off from sports for not "making the teams" in large Public Schools. At Northside, everyone will have a go at all sports and while excellence is sought, no one is made to feel inadequate for not being an expert. For those students fun and discovery are key.
Evening sports and activities are also organised on most week nights after supper and before prep as well as on the weekends, such as indoor swimming and diving, gymnastics, weight-training, gym, indoor rock-climbing, trampoline, badminton, etc). These activities are never compulsory and the students are encouraged, rather than forced, to find what best suits their likes and personality.
