Medical English School in Vancouver, Canada

Vancouver Medical English Institute:
Located in British Columbia, Canada, the Vancouver Medical English Institute (VMEI) offers immersion courses in English as a Second Language designed for Medical Professionals (doctors, nurses, medical students, pharmacists, medical technicians and other professions where medical terminology and usage is needed). Using the methods and unique curriculum developed by Pikku Vichert, the courses are concentrated on the use of English in a medical context. They teach both the language and culturally appropriate communication skills for practicing medical careers in an English speaking environment.

VMEI understands that medical professionals need to make the best possible use of their limited time and therefore it has designed courses that produce results as quickly as possible. All Medical English courses are limited to a maximum of four students per class. This allows students effective interaction and provides ample opportunity for individual attention.

 Courses:

Core Medical English Course: This course is the heart of the VMEI curriculum. This class concentrates on the aspects of the English Language that are useful specifically for the medical professional.
Practicing Medical English: This reinforcement course is designed to complement the Core Medical English Course and the best results are usually obtained by by taking the two courses together. (The Core Medical English Program)
Medical Presentation: This course is designed for presenters unaccustomed to speaking English who need to give papers in English at Medical Conventions or Conferences. It concentrates on delivery and correct pronunciation to ensure understanding by the audience.
Preparation for Medical English: This is an ESL course for students that need to improve their English level before entering the Medical English Program. It will bring the student up to the level required for entry to the Core Medical English Course.

 Activities:

Because VMEI is a small specialized school whose students all have medical professions in common, it is usually easy for the students and staff to become friends. VMEI arranges at least one social occasion each week when everyone is invited to participate in a meal or a recreational outing together. The Institute also sets up medical networking events so students can meet and talk to local medical professionals.

In addition to what the Institute arranges students find many occasions to enjoy Vancouver while practicing their English. Vancouver is a city with unparalleled opportunities for leisure activities. Outdoor activities include hiking in the local mountains, picnics, skiing and snowboarding, camping, horseback riding, sailing, water sports, and weekend trips to visit other parts of British Columbia.

There is also a vibrant night life in the city with coffee shops, restaurants, pubs and nightclubs to suit every taste and budget. Vancouver hosts many concerts and theatrical performances as well as festivals and celebrations reflecting the diverse cultural mix that makes Vancouver its home.

 Internship:

For interested students VMEI will arrange a working experience in the medical field. This would be an unpaid position and would usually involve "shadowing" a Canadian medical professional as they went about their work. There is no charge to registered full-time students for this service.

There are many opportunities for volunteer work in medically related organizations and while the student may not be able to work exactly in their own specialty, the interaction of working in with medical professionals in a Canadian medical context can provide excellent experience and a great opportunity to practice the English skills learned in the classroom.

Students who want to do a medical internship in a hospital in Vancouver or British Columbia, are required by law to pass both the Canadian and the British Columbian medical/nursing exams or an exam that is related to the students field of expertise. This can be a lengthy procedure and we will try to help students with this on a case by case basis.

 Accommodation:

VMEI can help students find a place to live. There are many different types of accommodation you can choose from. One of the most popular and affordable types of accommodation is homestay, where you live in a home as part of the family.

Temporary Accommodation

If you need somewhere to stay while you look for a more permanent place to live, the YWCA and Hostelling International are reasonably priced. There are many hotels near VMEI. Some of them are the Ramada, the Victorian Hotel, the St. Regis, the Burrard Inn and the Days Inn.

Apartments
Vancouver has a wide variety of furnished and unfurnished apartments available. VMEI can find a furnished apartment for you in the downtown area, close to the school. These apartments are comfortable and secure, and some have swimming pools and exercise rooms. If you want, VMEI will arrange it for you and personally inspect it before you arrive.

Homestay Accommodation
We find that homestay is a good way of making contact with local Canadians and practicing your English. Let us know and we will arrange it for you.

Bed & Breakfast (B&B)
These are small hotels or pensions which are a good option for the first few days if you will be looking for a place to stay after you get here.

Shared Accommodation
It is common for two or more students in Vancouver to rent a house or apartment and share the expenses. You may want to consider this after you meet other students at the Institute, or you can look at the shared accommodation that is advertised in the newspaper here. You will, however, have to make your own arrangements for this type of accommodation.
