Courses
General English Programs
General English Classes are our most popular program with over 2000 students enrolling each year. You will study English at our downtown campus in the historic Blake Mansion. We provide small class sizes (max. 9 students) to ensure that each student gets the attention they need to succeed. We offer two scheduling options:
1. Intensive Program (4 classes per day)
2. Semi-Intensive Program (3 classes per day)
The Intensive Program is the best choice for students who want to accelerate their learning. Both programs offer the same core curriculum which focuses on Grammar and Writing; Listening and Speaking; Reading and Vocabulary. Students enrolled in the Intensive Program are able to choose an additional elective course such as Business English or Conversation and Pronunciation.

TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language
Recognized by universities, colleges and businesses worldwide, successful completion of the new TOEFL iBT can help you achieve your professional and academic goals. Our 12 week Program focuses on reading, listening, speaking and writing. Frequent practice tests will measure your progress and ensure you are comfortable with the format and timing of the examination. Using the latest material and technology in a small class setting, this Program will give you the tools and confidence necessary to achieve your goals.
TOEIC - Test of English for International Communication
TOEIC is a standardized English proficiency test for speakers of English as a second language. The test aims to indicate how well a person can communicate in English in a business or workplace environment. IH Toronto's 12 week Program will help you build the listening and reading comprehension skills needed for achieving a high score. You will learn strategies for increasing your vocabulary and answering multiple-choice questions.
Cambridge Exam Preparation
First Certificate in English (FCE) is an internationally recognized upper intermediate level exam developed by the University of Cambridge. It is designed for learners who want to use English for work or study purposes. Successful candidates will have a strong vocabulary and possess sufficent proficiency in English to operate effectively in clearical, secretarial and managerial jobs. FCE is recognized by many universities as proof of intermediate level English skills and can be used to satisfy university entrance requirements.
Our 12 week FCE preparation course will prepare you for all 5 parts of the exam: 1. Reading 2. Writing 3. Listening 4. Speaking 5. Use of English (grammar and vocabulary)
Private One-To-One Tutor Classes / Semi-Private Classes
Private and Semi-Private (groups of two or more) Tutorials are offered covering a wide range of topics with great flexibility. You can arrange for regular ESL Tutorials or Executive English Tutorials. Your teacher will work with you to customize your lessons. You can even combine this program with other IHT Programs.
In-Home Study Program
The IH Toronto In-Home Study Program means living at home with a carefully selected teacher with whom you study English intensively each day. It's a faster and more effective method than traditional classroom teaching. In addition to the English tutorials, you will play a part in home life, practice your English from morning to night, join in on conversations at meal times and meet people socially.
This program is suitable for most ages and levels of English. Even a basic knowledge of the language will enable rapid progress. Compatibility with your teacher is very important and our personal service ensures we match each student to the most appropriate teacher on the basis of their needs and interests.
Your course is tailored to be as intensive as you want and to fit in with your schedule. Courses are available throughout the year as you decide which day you wish to start and which day you wish to finish. During the first lesson, your teacher will assess your language ability and discuss what you want to achieve. The teacher will then design a Personal Study Plan to fulfill your objectives by making the most effective use of your lesson time. Each lesson lasts 1 hour. Enrolment includes accommodation, 3 meals per day and access to the school's social program and computer labs.
Professional Internship and Volunteer Placement Program
As an IH Toronto student, you have two options for gaining valuable work experience in Canada:
Internship: For students with a professional background and at least a high-intermediate level of English, we offer a Professional Internship Placement. Based on your work experience and education, we will place you in one of our large networks of local businesses. You will learn from the experts, practice your English with native speakers, learn industry-related jargon, and gain the experience and confidence you will need for future jobs in your field.
Volunteering: If you are not looking for a particular field of work but just a place to gain some work experience in an English speaking environment, IH Toronto's Volunteer Placement will give you the opportunity to work in an entry-level position that may or may not relate to your field of study. However, it is a chance to meet new people, improve your English skills through interaction with native speakers and provide help to local communities. Volunteer positions are generally in environmental or community service fields.
IH Sol Group Summer Adventure Program
This is a unique program designed specifically for students between the ages of 12 and 17. This program combines English study with fun excursions and social activities, which makes it the perfect choice for holiday students. Students will spend the mornings in an intensive English program with our dedicated and experienced team of English teachers. In the afternoons, evenings and on weekends, students will have the opportunity to participate in sightseeing excursions, educational outings and sports activities that are arranged and supervised by our energetic staff of activity counselors. All Junior Programs are designed to provide students with a unique learning opportunity. Students are encouraged to learn independent decision making and take part in life-skill development normally not offered to them in their regular school curriculum. The Summer Adventure Program is an opportunity of a lifetime for students to learn English, gain valuable social skills and enrich their cultural understanding through interaction in a multicultural setting.
TESL Canada certified intensive ESL teacher training
To meet the needs of our students we offer two great teacher training programs that will qualify you to teach English, whether you are planning to do so in your home country or in Canada or travel the world and teach.
International House Toronto offers a TESL Canada Diploma program, certified by TESL Canada, for those with English as their native language or those with a high level of proficiency of the English Language. The Program requires students to have a university degree in addition to the application process required by IH Toronto.
IH Toronto also offers a TESOL Certificate Course for those without a university degree or for students with a lower level of English proficiency. This program is ideal for native English speakers looking for some formal training and perhaps considering teaching abroad. It is also a great program for non-native students thinking about teaching English in their home countries. The program is certified by IH Toronto and is one of the best recognized TESOL/TEFL programs offered in Canada.
