Cisco Certification Training - Career Options
|
What it involves:
Cisco is the leading supplier of networking
equipment & network management for the Internet.
The name "Cisco" is believed to be an
abbreviation of San Francisco and their logo
represents the golden gate bridge. Over the
years Cisco has developed a curriculum of
courses for IT Professionals to educate them on
networking technologies and Cisco products.
Certifications are attained by completing a
relevant set of exams which are available at
third party testing centers worldwide.
Attaining Cisco certification proves to your
employers and associates that you have up to
date network skills. Cisco offers three levels
of certifications – Associate, Professional and
Expert which examine your knowledge at different
stages of your career and offer progression to
the next level.
Cisco Associate:
IT professionals can first become Cisco
Associates by passing either the CCNA or CCDA
exam. This is a good starting point for a career
in technical support or for someone who has
worked in Technical Support or a Junior Network
position and would like to get certification for
their skills.
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
proves that the network professional is capable
of installing, configuring and operating medium
sized routed LAN, routed WAN and switched LAN
networks.
- Cisco Certified Design Associate (CCDA)
validates a network professionals knowledge of
Cisco Network design. CCDA certified
professionals are capable of designing
switched/routed networks consisting of LANs and
WANs. Cisco recommends candidates first take the
CCNA though this is not a prerequisite.
Cisco Professional:
If you have already passed the associate exam
and have progressed in your career you should
think of becoming a Cisco Professional. You can
do this by choosing one of the available paths
detailed below. Network Administrators, Network
Security Managers and Network Designers are but
a few of the career opportunities available for
Cisco Professionals.
- Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)
certifies your ability to work with local and
wide area networks with 100 to 500+ end devices.
To certify as a CCNP you must pass four exams.
The CCNA is a prerequisite for CCNP.
- Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP) is
the advanced network design certification.
Students are tested in a variety devices and how
to interconnect them. The CCNA and CCDA are
prerequisites.
- Cisco Certified Security Professional (CCSP)
is the advanced network security certification.
Students are tested in various security products
including VPN, IDS, PIX firewall, Cisco SAFE and
Secure IOS. The CCNA is a prerequisite along
with one other professional certification.
- Cisco Certified Internetwork Professional (CCIP)
covers end to end protocols used in large
networks. Exams include BGP, MPLS and Quality of
service.
- Cisco Certified Voice Professional (CCVP)
covers all aspects of IP Telephony/ VOIP
networks and applications. Exams include Quality
of service, Cisco VoIP, Troubleshooting, Cisco
IP Telephony and Gateway Gatekeeper.
Cisco Expert:
Cisco Experts (CCIE) is the highest of Cisco
qualifications and students must pass a written
and lab exam to attain CCIE status (Cisco Certified Internetwork
Expert). Only three
percent of Cisco Professionals have become CCIE’s. This certification is suitable for
Senior Technical Architects who have a wealth of
experience in their chosen path. The following
paths are available to CCIE’s:
- Routing and Switching
- Security
- Voice over IP
- Storage Networking
- Service provider Networks
