Fashion Design / Pattern Making Courses

Fashion Jobs.
Studying Fashion Design / Pattern Making:
Fashion designers design clothing, footwear and
accessories for men, women and children. They
are creative and artistic people with an eye for
color and detail. They study trends in fashion
and try to predict future trends. They may
travel several times a year to trade shows and
fashion shows to keep abreast of developments in
the industry.
Fashion designers sketch their
ideas for the clothing or accessories, select
the colors and the fabrics to be used and create
the prototype for the finished product. The
finished samples are then marketed to retailers,
often through fashion and trade shows. The
retailers order certain items which are then
manufactured and distributed to stores. In some
smaller design houses, the designer will also
carry out many of the pattern making and sewing
tasks. In larger design houses, these tasks are
performed by specialized pattern makers who are
responsible for the assembly of the finished
product.
Choosing a course:
The fashion industry is a highly competitive
one. The more highly educated and specialized in
your field you are, the more likely you are to
be hired. Many employers expect potential
candidates to have achieved a Bachelor’s Degree
at a minimum. You should be aware that you may
need to have completed some basic art or design
courses to gain entry to some Fashion Design
courses. You may also have to submit a portfolio
or sample sketches to prove your artistic
ability prior to acceptance. While Pattern
Making is usually covered in Fashion Design
courses, you can also choose a course that
focuses solely on Pattern Making.
What is involved:
A qualification in Fashion Design can take
between two to four years to complete. Some
courses concentrate solely on Design while
others incorporate training on Fashion
Merchandising or Marketing also. Subjects likely
to be covered include: Textiles, Color, Sewing
Skills, Pattern Making, Fashion History and
design of various types of apparel e.g. Footwear
or Accessories. You will also receive training
on the latest technology and industry processes.
For example, Computer Aided Design (CAD)
programs are now considered an integral part of
many courses. Some courses offer their students
the opportunity to work as interns within the
fashion industry to receive hands-on experience
and training from professionals. Others provide
the chance to visit fashion houses abroad.
Students are normally required to produce a
collection at the end of their final year. These
collections are normally displayed in a show
attended by prospective employers as well as
industry buyers.
Courses in Pattern Making
usually cover the following key areas: Drafting
– how to construct template or block patterns;
Lay Planning – how to lay out the pattern on the
chosen fabrics; Assembly – basic sewing and
assembly instructions. There is also an emphasis
on technical training in CAD or Computer Aided
Manufacture (CAM).
Accreditation:
You should always ensure that the course you
choose is an accredited one. By choosing an
accredited course, you are guaranteed of a high
standard of education that is recognized within
the fashion industry. The National Association
of Schools of Art and Design is the accrediting
body for approximately 250 educational
institutions in the US that offer programs in
art and design. Many of these schools offer
degrees in Fashion Design or courses in Pattern
Making. However, courses may also be accredited
by various regional accrediting bodies. If you
are unsure whether or not a course is
accredited, you should contact the institution
directly and enquire.
Career Options:
On completing their qualification, many fashion
designers start their career as pattern makers
or sketching assistants for more senior
designers. Most fashion designers work for
apparel manufacturers or wholesalers designing
clothing for the mass market. Other designers
might work for high-end department stores or for
specialty stores. Some high-fashion designers
are self-employed and enjoy great freedom in
their work. They may design for individual
clients from their own offices according to
their own schedule. However, it can be difficult
to work freelance in this field as the
competition for clients is fierce. Pattern
Makers will generally find employment with the
larger design houses or manufacturers. They may
also decide to set up their own business as
tailors or seamstresses. |
