Pilot Training - Career Opportunities
|
Flight / Pilot Training:
Even though there are various types of aircraft,
many of the principles of piloting them are the
same. Many training courses consist of a
combination of theoretical and practical
learning. Flight simulators are also used to
train pilots at a much lower cost and risk than
actual flying. Some of the careers you might
choose on receiving your commercial pilot’s
license are: Agricultural Pilot, Test Pilot,
Major Airline Pilot or Regional/Commuter Airline
Pilot.
Private Pilot:
The minimum amount of flight training required
for private pilots is generally set at 40 hours,
however most students require 50-80 hours of
training. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
is the pilot certification body in the United
States. To get your pilot’s license you must
pass the FAA Knowledge and Practical test. The
FAA Knowledge Test is administered at designated
testing centers and consists of 60 multiple
choice questions. Practical Tests are conducted
by an FAA or FAA-designated examiner. Upon
satisfactory completion of the knowledge and
practical test, a private pilot certificate is
immediately issued. Private pilots can fly for
business or pleasure but are not allowed to
accept compensation for flying.
Instrument Rating:
Instrument Rating is a qualification that
requires additional training and instruction to
the Private Pilot certificate. It is often a
prerequisite to getting your Commercial Pilots
License. To pass this examination you will have
to have a good knowledge of instruments,
including rules and procedures of instrument
flying, advanced knowledge of meteorology and
intensive training in flight solely by reference
to instruments. The exam consists of a written
and a practical test. The practical exam (check
ride) is divided into an oral exam and an actual
flight. This ensures that the pilot has the
practical skills required for safe flight at
night or in inclement weather.
Commercial Pilot:
To make a career out of flying you must first
obtain a commercial pilot license (CPL). The CPL
license gives you the privileges of flying for
compensation or hire. This license covers
careers in flight instruction, piloting large
airliners and even crop dusting. Having a
private license is a prerequisite and an
instrument rating is preferred by most schools.
You can get your commercial license through a
private instructor or a certified part 141
flight school, the hour requirements are a
little less at a flight school (190 hours) than
with an instructor (240 hours). It is also a
requirement that you have completed the
instrument rating (IR), or currently enrolled in
an instrument rating (IR) course. |
