Learn to Fly - Obtaining your Pilot's License

Learning to fly is one of life's greatest adventures. The freedom of flying, and the sensation experienced when breaking the boundaries of the ground by navigating above can only be understood by those who have done it. Flying provides continuous learning and challenges you, while building your confidence contacts.

Where to Start:
You can start off by getting a student pilot license from a qualified Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). The AME typically gives you a student pilot certificate to fill out as part of the third class medical exam. Your vision must be a minimum of 20/40 for near and distant vision, with or without corrective lenses. You must also be able to perceive all colors necessary for safe pilot performance. A student pilot certificate is valid for 24 months. If your student pilot certificate expires, you can renew it through a Designated Pilot Examiner or your local Flight Standards District Office.

Obtaining your Pilots License:
When you have attained your students pilot’s license you can then attend a flight school. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has established the minimum number of flight hours needed to obtain a certificate. Under Part 61 of the federal aviation regulations, the minimums are 20 hours for a sport pilot certificate, 30 hours for a recreational certificate, and 40 hours for a private pilot certificate.

Other schools operate under an alternative regulation, Part 141, which provides more rigid schedules and more paperwork. The added requirements allow these schools to reduce the minimum hours of private pilot training to 35 hours. However a true average flight training time for a private pilot is between 50 hours and 60 hours.

Suitable Aircraft:
For most student pilots, an aircraft such as a Piper Cherokee or Cessna 172 is probably the most suitable for learning to fly, although there are a number of other aircraft that can provide an excellent introduction to flight while offering reasonable operating costs (for example, the Cessna 152 or Piper Tomahawk)..
