Graphic Design Schools & Training - Career Opportunities
|
Note: A list of graphic design schools &
colleges can be
found
below this introduction.
What graphic design involves:
Graphic designers work in creative teams
generating visual communications. Successful
graphic designers can communicate their message
across various media including print, film and
electronic using different methods e.g.
illustration, photography, animation and various
print and layout techniques. Graphic Designers
mainly work in the following industries:
Print - Designing the layout of Magazines and
Newspapers
Retail - Creating promotional displays
Advertising - Designing Marketing brochures and
packaging
Corporate - Developing logos for products and
businesses
Signage - Create signs / environmental graphics
Internet - Web design / designing material for
interactive media
Film / TV - Designing credits and special
effects.
Graphic designers who work in the advertising /
corporate / print industries generally work core
business hours. In the corporate world graphic
designers work in creative teams and are
responsible for gathering the needs of the
client in order to design a message that appeals
to their customers. These Graphic Designers also
work closely with copywriters to develop any
text that may appear with the visual design. All
graphic designers need to be familiar with ink
and paper types for publication so that their
idea appears as designed.
Usually, there are many
mock up versions before the final design is sent
to print. Graphic web designers can work
freelance or for a large company. Designers
creating Web pages or other interactive media
designs use programming packages like the adobe
suite to animate and complete their designs.
Advances in computer software programs allow
designers to generate animations and graphics
quickly reducing production time and cost.
Education:
A bachelor's degree is required for most
entry-level graphic design jobs. Graphic
designers will need to be familiar with computer
graphics and software. Bachelor of fine arts /
graphic design courses are offered at many
universities, colleges and private schools. The
first year of your bachelor degree usually
covers various mediums and design types so you
can get a feeling for the different career
areas. You then can specialise in your second
year. As courses cover a comprehensive set of
subjects, it is important to select your
specialization in the discipline you wish to
develop a career in. Associate degree and
certificate programs are also available in graphic
design. These are suitable for candidates who
already have a bachelor degree in another
discipline, they can complete a 2 or 3 year
program in graphic design and then enter the
graphic design job market.
Career Opportunities:
All graphic design graduates must be familiar
with computer graphics and design software. It
is important to continually keep up to date with
the development of new and updated software in
order to succeed in your career. As the market
for internet and video entertainment is
expanding web graphic designers are in demand.
Experienced graphic designers in large firms may
advance to chief designer or creative director.
Some experienced designers open their own firms
or work on a freelance basis. It is important to
have a good portfolio with examples of your work
when attending interviews as this will help you
in getting a start to your career. Web graphic
designers should have a sample of their work on
live websites and should link them to their resume.
