Italian Courses in Dublin, Ireland

Istituto Italiano di Cultura:
The Istituto Italiano di Cultura, situated in an early nineteenth century Georgian building in the centre of Dublin, was established in 1954 with the aim of fostering and increasing the already existing links between Italy and Ireland. The Italian Cultural Institute acts not only as an image of Italy and as useful source of information on the Italian system, but is also the driving force behind the cultural initiatives and cooperation. It represents also the fundamental reference point for the Italian community abroad and is the centre of the growing demand of Italian culture around the world. Scholarships: A number of language schools in Italy offer study grants (generally covering fees for short-term summer and autumn course) to students of the IIC who have made excellent progress during the year.

 History:

The Italian Cultural Institute in Ireland was established in 1954. It is situated in an early nineteenth century Georgian building in the centre of Dublin, in Fitzwilliam Square, architecturally one of the most 'historic' and interesting squares in the city, facing a beautiful private park.

The building, part of the Irish Cultural Heritage, was purchased by the Italian Government in 1974. In 1987 a substantial restoration was undertaken, maintaining the original structures and enhancing those particular interior features which characterise it as one of the best preserved Georgian buildings in Dublin.

The Institute was founded with the aim of fostering and increasing the already existing cultural links between Ireland and Italy. From the beginning, it has carried out many of those activities which were later ratified by the Cultural Agreement between the two countries signed in 1984, consisting in joint initiatives in the fields of education, culture and science within the context of an increasing collaboration at European level.

These initiatives range from the promotion of teaching of Italian with relevant opportunities for cultural exchange, to the valuation of academic qualifications and the awarding of Italian Government scholarships to Irish scholars, University students, researchers and artists. Many personalities who are now very prominent in cultural life both in Ireland and abroad have been Italian scholarship holders.

The implementation of the Cultural Agreement also envisages exchanges between experts in both countries with a view of acquiring up-to-date information on developments and projects in Museums, Archives and Libraries. Moreover, its aim is to support joint programmes in the scientific field and translation projects as well as to encourage direct collaboration between the Radio and Television networks of both countries. Since 1994 the Institute in collaboration with RAI INTERNATIONAL and RTE has promoted the weekly broadcasting of the In Italiano and Viva l'Italiano.

With regard to cultural activities such as seminars, conferences, book presentations, exhibitions, concerts, theatre and cinema as well as initiatives to support publications of mutual interest, the Institute strongly believes in co-operation with Irish institutions and other European cultural bodies in Ireland, while providing regular cultural services through various facilities: library, language courses and lectures on various topics embracing different areas of Italian culture to be given either at the Institute or at other venues by eminent scholars and specialists.
