Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design:
This course is a full-time, two year programme that gives students an excellent grounding in the principles and practices of graphic design and illustration. Upon completion students can gain entry to the latter stages of degree programmes in graphic design in art colleges elsewhere in both Ireland and UK, and/or gain entry to the design industry.

This programme has been running with great success for several years now and offers students the opportunity to explore the principles and procedures of graphic design, with particular emphasis placed on the process of problem solving through design. On this course we not only push students conceptual thinking, but we also put a lot of emphasis on teaching students the practical skills they need to physically realize their ideas as graphic designer. Each module is comprehensively assessed throughout the year to ensure that each students skills and thought process are being developed to the highest possible standard.

Drawing plays a significant part in this course, as it is the fundamental cornerstone of all art and design courses. Computer rendered artwork plays an equally important role but this course aims to teach students how to combine traditional techniques and modern technology with innovative conceptual thinking to solve design problems rather than using technology as a design crutch. Students work with and receive extensive and practical training in the use of industry standard hardware and software including Mac computers, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash and QuarkXpress, as well as training in traditional media such as gauche, acrylic, watercolour and professional presentation techniques.

Course Content:
Computer Applications in Art and Design, Image Manipulation Applications, Developing a Personal Style, Ideas Generation, Typographic Skills, Photography, Historical and Contextual Referencing, Drawing Techniques and Approaches, Professional Studies, Critical Studies, Ideas in Context, Corporate Identity, Working in the Digital Environment, Design Craft Skills, Packaging, Art Direction for Advertising.

Entry Requirements:
Leaving Certificate / LCVP with a minimum of two HC3s one of which must be in Art and three passes at ordinary level or any FETAC level 5 Certificate in Art with a merit profile. The academic entry requirements may be waived for mature applicants (21+).
