Career Opportunities:
There are many different careers open to makeup artists. In most states you can become a makeup artist immediately with out certification. You don’t need hours of training and written exams as with cosmetologists and massage therapists. All you need is the talent and passion for your career. If you have a good eye for colour, know the differences between skin types you are already half way there. You could volunteer or work as an apprentice at your local mall to gain experience and build on your skills. If you want to further you career into one of the following disciplines you would need to train and gain certification.
Some of different types of careers available to makeup artists are mentioned below:
Salon Makeup – this is where you would
work in a salon or department store counter. You
may need a cosmetologist license to work in a
salon which you can get by completing a course
in your local beauty school. You will be
required to do wedding and special occasion
makeup which you will need to take several
classes to know. You do not need a license to
work in a department store. This is an ideal way
to get on the job experience but as this is
sales based you will need to also focus on
selling the products to customers.
Photography Makeup – to have a career as
a photography makeup artist you should go about
photographing your friends and family in order
to build up a portfolio. You can then use your
portfolio in interviews with talent agencies.
You can then volunteer to work at boutiques or
fashion shows in order to get some of your
photographs published. If you can achieve this
then you can add to your portfolio and start
charging for your work.
Special Effects Makeup – knowledge of
sculpture would come in useful here as would
computer graphic skills. Most special effects
makeup artists work in a lab environment on a
movie set. Work may be scarce enough so research
job openings well before committing to a career
in special effects makeup.
Media Makeup – is for people who want to
work in television, music videos, film and
print. You need the knowledge of light and
shadow, balance and technique for each type of
media. You may want to work with entertainers,
models actors etc. If you can combine this with
hair you will become more employable. As with
photography makeup artists you need experience
so it would be a good idea to volunteer on a
student film to get started. There are special
film classes at makeup schools that teach
character work, film paper work and script that
are an advantage to know.
Theatre Makeup – this includes Opera and
requires the artist to use dramatic makeup
products so the entire audience can see the
expressions. Many colleges teach theatre makeup,
courses include making masks, prosthetic limbs,
bald caps and aging makeup.
