Marketing Internships

Post Marketing Internship Jobs.

What Marketing is about (briefly):

When starting out on a marketing career, it is important to know exactly what marketing entails. The purpose of marketing is to design and execute a marketing plan that will enable a company or organization to successfully sell a product or service. It incorporates elements of sales, advertising, distribution and public relations. A key aspect of marketing is identifying potential customers through market research and ensuring that the end product is desirable to them.

Those who work in marketing are concerned with gaining new customers while trying to retain existing customers using various forms of promotional materials and events. Brand management is also important to encourage customer loyalty and make the product or service appealing to new customers.

Marketing internships are temporary positions for students within the marketing department of a company / organization or in a marketing consultancy. Interns can gain practical experience while working with professionals within the industry. These positions are usually unpaid although some companies will cover expenses such as transport costs or lunch. Internships generally last for a few months and are generally completed in the second or third year of study. They are usually part-time during the academic year and full-time during the summer months.

Students may be able to gain academic credit for a successful internship. Internships can be an excellent way of getting your foot in the door of leading companies and making valuable contacts by proving your abilities. Many marketing interns find full-time employment on graduation with the company they completed their internship with.

What does a marketing internship entail?
A marketing internship can provide you with exposure to all aspects of marketing. You may be expected to do administrative work such as maintaining customer databases. You might be required to generate new customer leads by distributing promotional material or through cold calling potential customers. You may get to help in the coordination and implementation of promotional events.

Marketing interns may also have the opportunity to design and carry out market research as well as analyzing the results. You may be involved in the design of advertising materials from the initial concept to their placement in publications or distribution to the public. You might help with the development of marketing plans for particular clients. The chance to gain hands on experience while working alongside professionals is highly beneficial.

How do I find a marketing internship?
Your school will sometimes help to place you within the marketing industry. You should check with their Career Services office for any internship opportunities available. Otherwise you should distribute your resume with a cover letter to any organizations that you would like to work with. If there is a particular company you are interested in, make sure that you check their deadline for internship applications.

Competition for internships with leading companies can be intense. If you are invited to attend an interview, ensure that you have thoroughly researched the company. You also need to be prepared to explain why you want an internship with this particular company.

What skills do you need to win a marketing internship?
Marketing students or recent graduates have an advantage when it comes to obtaining marketing internships. You should be able to show that you are passionate about the industry and that you are familiar with the latest industry trends and developments. You will need to have good computer skills and be particularly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Marketing is considered to be a creative industry so an ability to come up with innovative ideas for marketing plans or promotional materials is an advantage. However, you will also require the ability to methodically research potential markets and competitors and analyze the results of this research. You will need to show initiative and be able to work independently. However, the ability to work effectively as part of a team is essential. Excellent communication skills are key to success in marketing. You will need to be able to clearly express yourself verbally and through the written word.
