Certification:
There are over 80 types of massage therapy
available, including among others - Acupressure, Amma Therapy, Aromatherapy Massage, Feldenkrais
system of bodywork, Hawaiian massage, Hot Stone
Massage, Infant Massage, Ma-Uri Massage, Medical
or Clinical Massage, Muscle Energy Technique,
Neuromuscular Therapy, Prenatal/Pregnancy
Massage, Reflexology, Rolfing, Scalp Massage,
Shiatsu, Sports massage, Strain/Counter Strain,
"Swedish massage" (the most common type of
massage therapy, combining a wide range of
motions such as soothing and kneading strokes to
warm up the body, and the rolling and squeezing
of specific muscle groups to relieve soreness),
Thai Massage, Watsu (in water) and Zero
Balancing.
Massage Therapy Certification was established so that high standards of ethical and professional practice are maintained by therapists. Most states use The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) to grant licenses to therapists. NCBTMB maintains the quality of the Certification program and ensures through continuing education that therapist’s skills are kept current.
Massage Therapy certification is mandatory in 38 states and
in the District of Columbia. 32 of those use or
recognize NCBTMB examinations; including
Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut,
Delaware, DC, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa,
Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland,
Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New
Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North
Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina,
South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia,
Washington, Wisconsin, West Virginia.
Before becoming a certified therapist it is essential to have relevant training and experience and be able to demonstrate your skills. To certify, Massage Therapists must submit continuing education and documentation for 200 hours of hands on experience completed during the four year certification cycle. The written Ethics exam must also be taken from an approved NCBTMB provider. The ethics exam tests whether the massage therapist understands the basic principles of massage therapy and bodywork. There is also a practical exam where the therapist must demonstrate their skills.
