Medical Billing Training - Career Options
|
What it involves:
Medical Billing is the process of submitting claims to insurance companies in order to receive payment for services provided by a health care professional. When a patient has a physical examination the medical information obtained is then evaluated by qualified staff to determine the level of service that will be used to bill the insurance company. Once determined the level of service is then translated into a five digit code from the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT).
The CPT code describes medical, surgical and diagnostic services so that this information can be communicated to doctors, coders, patients and insurance companies. When the CPT codes are determined the medical biller sends the claim to the insurance company. The Insurance Company then processes the claim by testing the validity of the claim and the patients eligibility for payment. On reviewing these criteria the insurance company either pays or rejects the claim. It is important that all the information relating to the claim is submitted to the Insurance company error free or else the claim will be rejected.
Certification:
Becoming a Certified Medical Billing Specialist is a voluntary exam for the medical billing profession. The CMRS certification is one such certification awarded by the Certifying Board of the American Medical Billing Association (AMBA). The government does not require a medical biller to be certified, but it is recommended in order to practice medical billing. Certification through AMBA
proves that the student has competency in claims
handling, compliance and Medical Billing.
Certification courses vary buy many consist of
the same modules e.g. Medical Terminology,
Anatomy and Physiology, Computers, Coding,
Insurance etc.
Career Opportunities:
As Insurance companies are investing more in combating fraud, medical billing has become one of the fastest growing jobs in the health care sector. On choosing a career in Medical Billing, certification is highly recommended as most major employers are now looking for formal Medical Billing training at an accredited training school. These courses range from nine months to two years. Any course less than nine months is not recommended. A successful medical biller will have good people skills, knowledge of medical terminology, required coding standards, basic computer skills and good typing speeds.

As medical billing is one of the fastest growing jobs in the health care sector opportunities are endless. Advancement roles include office managers, supervisors, managers, and directors of billing or examining departments, directors of coding, reimbursement.
