Children's Classes - Skills Classes
These game-based and workshop-oriented courses offer many avenues to express creativity and build self-esteem. Each skills course will hold a final demonstration on stage at the semester's end. Skills Classes are prerequisites for Playlabs.
Actor's Studio (Ages 7-12)
This fun, physical and vocal adventure prepares actors for the Playlab experience. Learn acting basics through a blend of theater games, improvisation, and character exploration. This fun and non-threatening format helps actors learn stage direction, etiquette, memorization, warmups and more. Class culminates with an interactive improvisational, comedy and storytelling showcase demonstrating the techniques introduced throughout the semester.
Advanced Scene Study (Ages 12-16)
Want to delve a bit deeper into your acting? This class will build upon your prior acting skills through exploring both classical and contemporary scenes and strengthening the ensemble through improv and movement. Class will culminate in a final showcase of all the scenes worked on during the semester. A non-threatening forum for both experienced actors and and interested beginners.
Pre- Arts: Storybook Theater (Ages 3-4)
With Josie Pelham, Rachel Tiemann & Abigail Gullo
Our youngest actors will explore multicultural stories through movement, music, visual art and dramatic play. In our state of the art theater space, students become sly tricksters, wild animals and clever heroes as they bring exciting tales to life.
Playlabs
Students experience all the elements of play production: costumes, lighting, makeup and character development. Students are responsible for learning lines, working cooperatively with their peers and must be available for final performances the week of June 4th, 2007. Prerequisite: prior play production experience, Actor's Studio, or any character acting skills class. No prior experience necessary for Young Actor's Workshop or Pre-Teen and Teen Showcase.
Emperor's New Clothes (Advanced Actors Age 8-11)
Hans Christian Andersen's Timeless story is set in a mythical kingdom where there is a parade everyday and a one man army. The Emperor is thought the wisest in the world, for he has read the dictionary all the way through. ADVANCED ACTORS work in an atmosphere where challenging play building skills are taught and emphasized. Good reading skills and previous New Acting Co. playlab/skills experience highly recommended for this advanced class.
Pre-Teen Showcase (Ages 12-16)
Class begins with improvisation and acting technique. Shortly after, a play will be selected by the class and instructor which is appropriate for all enrolled both in style and subject matter. Rehearsals will focus on characterization, acting technique, blocking strategies, relationship and memorization. The culminating performance will stem directly from all ensemble work and showcase student talents. A great class for those students who love the playlab experience.
The Adventures of Dr. Seuss (Intermediate Actors Age 6 1/2 - 8)
"The star belly Sneeches had bellies with stars, while the plain belly Sneeches had none upon thars". Sneeches, Grickle Grass and a Lorax are just a few Dr. Seuss favorites lovingly brought to life by our INTERMEDIATE ACTORS in this fantastical, magical menagerie. Great class for a beginner to Playlabs. Recommended Prerequisite: Young Actor's Workshop or Actor's Studio.
Young Actor's Workshop (Ages 5-6 1/2)
Our lively class introduces beginners to the world of storytelling, stage movement and self-expression. Children will explore theater basics, creative movement, songs and imaginative play. There will be a presentation for friends, family and guests on the last day of class. A friendly and low-key introduction to acting and theater.
New Acting Company Summer Camp
Two-Week Intensive Theater Camps
In this outrageously fun summer playmaking intensive, students will create an original play with their peers. In just two weeks, young actors will have the chance to sharpen acting skills, play theater games, and develop unique characters as playmakers. In addition, participants will have a hand in the set, costume, lighting, sound and make-up design of the show they create.
The focus is on self-expression, community building, problem solving, and understanding all aspects of theater creation. No experience required! This camp will take daily group outings to Washington Square Park, bi-weekly trips to the pool and will occasionally visit other relevant locations, to be announced to you in advance.
Students must make a commitment to the entire 2-week session, including the performance. Each session has a different thematic journey.
