Doing an online photography course - Benefits
of studying online:
Many educational institutions offer photography
courses online or via distance learning. This
could prove the most viable option if you live
too far from a school that you can attend in
person. Completing a photography course online
also allows you to set your own schedule around
any work or family commitments you have. Many
online photography courses provide valuable
one-to-one interaction with course tutors which
might not always be available in a classroom
setting.
Choosing a course:
It is possible to achieve qualifications in
photography up to diploma level online. However,
there is a wide variety of online photography
courses that cater for everyone from beginner to
those who wish to pursue photography as a
professional career. You should ensure that the
course you choose meets your individual needs.
For example, if you are a complete beginner, try
to find a course that provides a comprehensive
overview of the fundamentals of photography or
which provides advice in choosing a camera. A
more experienced photographer may be more
interested in a particular specialization or
wish to cover the technical aspects of
photography in more detail. If you are hoping to
become a professional photographer, you may wish
to choose a course that includes information on
how to set up your own studio or how to market
yourself and your work.
Most courses will cover
principles that are applicable to both 35mm
photography and digital photography but some
will focus on one or the other. Specialized
areas such as Sports Photography, Wildlife
Photography, Portraiture, Landscape Photography
and Wedding Photography are also covered in
different courses.
What is involved:
Online photography courses vary in length and
cost depending on your requirements. Photography
lessons are either e-mailed directly to you or
made available to you online. While subjects
offered depend on your skill level and
specialization, the following technical subjects
are usually covered: Lighting; Composition;
Color / Black and White; Exposure - Shutter
Speed / Aperture. Some courses also cover
Darkroom Developing and Printing and various
post-production techniques.
Many online courses
set photography assignments for their students
who then submit their photos for evaluation by
their tutors. Some institutions will provide
their students with their own online photo
gallery where their photos can be viewed and
critiqued by their fellow students. You may also
be able to interact with other students via
forums or message-boards.
Accreditation:
It is always advisable to choose an accredited
course to ensure that you are receiving a high
standard of education that has been approved by
photography professionals. The leading authority
recognized by the US Department of Education for
photography programs is The National Association
of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). If it is
unclear whether an online course is accredited
or not, you should feel free to call them and
enquire.
Career Options:
You may view photography simply as a hobby that
allows you to develop your creativity. However,
photographs are an essential part of all digital
and printed media. This means that there is
great scope for anyone hoping to become a
professional photographer. You could also choose
to become a wedding photographer or specialize
in portraiture. As long as you have a good
understanding of the technical aspects of
photography, a natural creative flair and are
prepared to market yourself and your services,
photography can be a very lucrative career. |
