Pharmacy Technician Certification Training - Career Options
|
What it involves:
A Pharmacy Technician is a member of staff who works in a pharmacy, hospital, nursing home or clinic who performs many pharmacy related functions. A pharmacy technician reports to a licensed pharmacist and typical duties include dispensing medication, organizing supplies of medicine for patients, packaging and labeling doses of medication and general pharmacy duties. The licensed pharmacist must check all medications before they are given to the patient. As the duties of licensed pharmacists increase pharmacy technicians who work in hospitals generally have more responsibility in the management of the dispensary, as licensed pharmacists focus more on independent prescribing, consulting and advising patients. In this scenario a pharmacy aide would be hired to carry out the more basic duties e.g. answering the phone, data entry and stocking the shelves.
Certification:
Until now, most pharmacy technicians just received on the job training. Currently major employers look for formal training and certifications when recruiting. The most popular certification is the Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) given by the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT).
Another popular certification is provided by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Completing one of these exams earns you the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential. Exams include labs and a work placement so the student can gain hands on industry experience. CPhT certification is currently mandatory in the state of Virginia and will be introduced to other states in the near future.
Career Opportunities:
Certified Pharmacy Technicians are skilled workers in the healthcare industry. Pharmacy Technicians earn salaries similar to other entry level healthcare positions such as physical therapist assistants and surgical technicians. Large Hospitals and Clinics will offer well defined career paths and progression opportunities to senior roles e.g. Senior Pharmacy Technician and even Pharmacy Technician Director. As more and more states are bringing certification into law it is advisable to non certified pharmacy technicians and students thinking of entering the field to achieve CPhT certification from an accredited school.
Achieving certification as a pharmacy technician proves that you have achieved high standards of practice and dedication in your field. You will have the competitive edge when interviewing for a role and with the increase in pharmacy technician duties, opportunities to progress to senior pharmacy technician roles are endless.
