What it involves:
Audio, Broadcast and Sound Engineering Technicians and
Production Engineers are employed by radio stations, television networks, recording studios, concert promoters or movie production houses. College training in broadcast technology and electronics gives you the best foundation for a career.
Certification:
As Broadcast / Audio / Sound Engineering jobseekers face keen opposition, you can get ahead of the competition by achieving certification for your skills. The Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) offers a certification program that is recognized industry wide as a mark of competence and experience. The SBE certification achieved national status in 2003 when it was recognized by the National Skill Standards Board (NSSB). The NSSB accreditation means that along with
guaranteeing quality the SBE certification must also keep current with changes in the industry. SBE
offers the following certification options.
- Certified Television Operator (CTO)
- Certified Radio Operator (CRO)
- Certified Broadcast Technologist (CBT)
- Certified Audio Engineer (CEA)
- Certified Broadcast Networking Technologist (CBNT)
- Certified Video Engineer (CEV)
- Certified Broadcast Radio Engineer (CBRE)
- Certified Senior Broadcast Radio Engineer (CSRE)
- Certified Broadcast Television Engineer (CBTE)
- Certified Senior Broadcast Television Engineer
(CSTE)
- Certified 8-VSB Specialist (8-VSB)
- Certified Professional Broadcast Engineer (CPBE)
- Certified AM Directional Specialist (AMD)
Technical schools, community colleges, or college training in broadcast technology, electronics, or computer networking provides the best preparation for SBE Certification. The exam consists of multiple choice questions. Some of the Senior Broadcast Engineer and Specialist exams require essay answers. The exams are designed to incorporate real world scenarios. You should have a good practical knowledge of your chosen exam area, as memorizing answers is not enough.
The exam must be completed with three hours. Candidates will only be notified if they passed or failed, score ratings are not available. The continuing education of broadcast / audio / visual engineers is necessary to remain up to date with the industry. Certifications are valid for 5 years, recertification must then be completed to maintain your qualification. |

This diploma program provides the education and experience needed to enter the world of professional audio production. 2 week Introduction to Basic Recording Techniques. Pro Tools 101 and 110 are certification programs using Digidesign’s industry standard software.
