 Why choose us:

-The island is small and charming so students immediately feel at home on this peaceful but lively island, famous for its cleanliness and safety.
- Due to Flores’s small population it is easy to get to know the locals and to practice their Spanish.
- The island has well-developed hotels, restaurants, bars, and travel agencies that cater to travelers’ every needs.

 Teachers:

Our teachers are all native speakers from the area who have received and successfully passed an examination that tested their abilities to teach Spanish to foreigners. Most of them have had several years of experience teaching. They are very enthusiastic about helping students understand Guatemalan culture and increasing their knowledge of the Spanish language.

 Courses:

One-on-one Spanish Lessons; Spanish Group Courses; Travel Spanish Crash Courses.

 Accommodation:

All student accomodations are in either Flores (within a short walking distance from the school) or San Miguel (a 5-minute boat ride from Flores) in safe neighborhoods. You can choose from:
Homestay - There is no better way to learn about a country’s culture than to live with a host family.
Student residence - Students may choose between a single and double room, with a private or shared bathroom.
Hotel - This is the perfect choice for students looking to unwind each evening in their own private room.

 Activities:

As a student on the island, you can:
- Swim. During breaks and in your free time, take a swim in the warm waters of Lake Petén Itza to escape the heat.
- Take a boat ride. Stroll along the shoreline and wait for a boatsman to invite you for a ride on the lake to visit one of the nearby villages. (Have a look at some suggested activities around the lake!)
- Visit traditional shops of indigenous Mayans, who have moved from their homes in the highlands to the island of Flores, to listen to their stories or watch them weave their famous, brightly colored traditional clothing. These native people constitute over half of the population of Guatemala are undoubtedly one of the best sources for learning about Guatemalan culture.

 Mayan sites:

Mayan sitesFlores is the gateway to the Mayan World and Café Arqueológico Yaxha is the place to book your Mayan adventures. We organize day trips to the two most famous archaeological sites in the region, Tikal and Yaxha, as well as to the lesser-known sites of La Blanca and San Clemente. Furthermore, at our school Dos Mundos we organize special Mayan dinners with informative slide shows about Mayan culture for small or large groups.

For exceptional experiences, we offer two to five-day trips to sites that lie deep within the jungle and are only accessible by foot. While hiking through the jungle, participants learn about local flora and fauna and, at the sites of La Blanca and San Clemente, gain comprehensive insight into the detailed operation of a running archaeological project. Our scientific tours aim to support the communities of the villages that lie next to small and rarely visited Mayan sites. Our hope is that once community members realize the importance of "their" sites, they will attempt to protect them from illegal grave-robbers and vandals

 Guatemala:

The Republic of Guatemala is located in Central America and neighbors Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador. It is 109,000 km² in area and has a population of 14.7 million. The picturesque island of Flores is located in the north of the country on the third largest lake in Guatemala. It is situated in the heart of the tropical rain forest - which covers almost the entirety of Petén - and has a population of 2,600.

Guatemala is the perfect country for travelers! Guatemalans are very friendly and are always willing to help tourists who ask for help. Travelers who are able to speak even a little Spanish have an advantage over those who do not, as a basic understanding of the language makes it is easier to contact the locals and receive a more in-depth knowledge of Guatemalan history and culture.

Guatemala offers a plethora of opportunities for adventurous people. The colonial city of Antigua is one of the best preserved in the world and provides tourists the chance to explore a bounty of historic monuments and nature sites. Travelers can even climb impressive volcanoes such as Pacaya (easily accessible from both Guatemala City and Antigua) with a guide.
