Summer Design Courses in London & Milan

London Milan 2009: The Dual City Summer Sessions:
Enrol on the London Milan Summer Sessions and experience a unique two or four week course in either fashion, graphics, interiors, event or product design. If you are a beginner and wish to build a portfolio and sample a real design school atmosphere or an experienced student or professional who wishes to build upon existing skills there will be a course in our 2009 programme for you. The courses in each city have been designed to compliment each other so that by the end of your studies you will have a portfolio of new work that represents two different approaches to teaching, along with new friends and a new international perspective of your creative subject. Now in its fourth successful year, this unique collaboration between Central Saint Martins in London and Domus Academy and NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan enables students to study in two of Europe’s most inspiring cities. A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded from each school on completion on the course.

Beginners Courses
Beginners Courses are hands-on practical courses suitable for beginners and portfolio builders – perfect for students planning on applying for further study or for those trying something for the first time. Each subject area includes courses in London and Milan, so students must attend both sessions.

Photography and the Moving Image for Beginners
Topics Covered: Primitive photography, understanding film and papers, introduction to darkroom printing and experimental techniques, history and theory of photography and discussions on the aesthetics of image making, introduction to simple animation and narrative, introduction to digital photography.

Who Should Attend: This course is ideal for anyone considering future studies in photography,Summer Schools / Programs film or video and who wishes to build the beginnings of a unique, creative portfolio or showreel.

Graphics in Fashion for Beginners

Fashion Design for Beginners
Topics Covered: Design and illustration skills, Research skills, Presentation and communication skills, Finding inspiration, Fashion Trends and History

Who Should Attend: This course is ideal for beginners who are interested in building a portfolio for future studies in fashion or a related discipline. You should be creative, enjoy working on self-directed projects and be keen to be immersed in the design school atmosphere.

Fashion Styling for Beginners
Topics Covered: Mannequin experiments, Trend reports and mood-boards, Working with photographers, Industry project and research presentation, Preparing a shoot and critiquing the work, Museum visits, market visits and lectures from guest speakers, Final presentation of finished project.

Who Should Attend: Anyone who is new to fashion and the industry and who is considering future studies in design, styling, marketing or promotion within fashion. It is an ideal experience for inquisitive and independent students who can work on their own and in teams to creative briefs and strict deadlines.

Interior Design for Beginners
Topics Covered: In London ySummer Schools / Programsou will work on one project that is brand related which will enable you to access a palate of materials, textures and colours with which to design. Practical design exercises will be accompanied by applying new skills to the brief. In Milan your project work will also include making a presentation as a designer and a member of a team with the support of a model and/or a short story in digital format, and reporting the importance of research and teamwork.

Who Should Attend: The course is aimed at ambitious beginners who have never studied interior design and also professionals, such as textile designers or architects, who want to gain some experience of designing an interior for the first time. The projects are open and flexible enough to appeal to many different approaches.

Product Design for Beginners
Topics Covered: Research skills, creative thinking and design skills, working in groups, model-making, drawing, presentation skills, including digital and verbal communication.

Who Should Attend: The course is aimed at the beginner with passion for design and process or for the individual looking for a change of career. The topics covered will form the foundation and core skills for projects on future design courses.

Advanced Courses
Advanced courses complement each other often looking at the same branch of design from completely different angles. Suitable for students who have completed at least two years of a degree in a related subject or professionals working in the field who need a boost. Students may enrol for the corresponding sessions in London and Milan or choose just one course.

Cool Hunting
Topics Covered: Research project throughout (based on themes of colour, culture and/or architecture). Individual or in teams. Presentation of outcomes.

Who Should Attend: The objective of the course is to experience London with a like-minded group and to gain confidence in expressing and experimenting with your ideas. The course is therefore aimed at students who have a natural curiosity, like travel and have an interest in design and fashion.

Creating a Fashion Collection

Topics Covered: Research, Design development, Draping, Presentation.

Who Should Attend: Existing fashion students or anyone new to the fashion industry who needs to bridge the gap between education and professional practice, or anyone who has been working in the industry and wants to recharge their creativity.

Cultural Tours of the Best in Design
Topics Covered: You will spend time learning about current design trends and collected relevant research to present at the end of the course

Who Should Attend: Anyone studying or working in design and who is inquisitive, has an open mind to new ideas, enjoys discussing their ideas and the ideas of others and who is looking to improve their knowledge of contemporary design in a London context.

Design for Consumer Electronics

Interior Design for Retail
Topics Covered: Creating visually stimulating environments, Graphics and signage, Model-making, Product handling, History of mannequins and dressing and handling. Visits include Adel Rootsteins factory and showroom, Proportion factory and showroon, Concorde Graphics, iGuzzini, Materials Lab and Madame Tussauds design studio.

Who Should Attend: This course is ideal for anyone studying a relevant design discipline or working in the retail industry and who wants to improve their research abilities, presentation skills and creativity.

Textiles for Interiors

Topics Covered: Research skills, Design skills, Practical workshops in making: basic print, weave, knit or other experimental forms of constructions, Portfolio development and presentation skills, History of textiles in interiors.

Who Should Attend: Anyone studying textiles or fashion at college who wishes to expend upon their portfolio into interior design. You should be self-motivated, creative and willing to explore materials and experiment with ideas towards producing unique work.
