London Milan 2009: The Dual City Summer Sessions:
London Milan 2009: The Dual City Summer Sessions gives students and new designers from around the world the opportunity to experience four weeks of design tuition and experimentation in world-renowned institutions. This unique collaboration between Central Saint Martins in London and Domus Academy and NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan enables students to study in two of Europe’s most inspiring cities taking complementary courses in the fields of Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Product Design, Event Design and Photography. This collaboration is now in its fourth successful year. Last year over 200 students from 40 different countries joined these dynamic short courses and came away with fresh ideas, new creative energies and new friends. A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded by each of the three schools on completion of the courses.

Beginners Courses
Beginners Courses are hands-on practical courses suitable for beginners and portfolio builders – perfect for students planning on applying for further study or for those trying something for the first time. Each subject area includes courses in London and Milan, so students must attend both sessions.
- Fashion Design for beginners
This course is ideal for beginners who are interested in building a portfolio for future studies in fashion or a related discipline. You should be creative, enjoy working on self-directed projects and be keen to be immersed in the design
school atmosphere.
Topics covered: Research skills, Finding inspiration, Design and illustration skills, Presentation and communication skills, Fashion Trends and History
- Fashion Styling for beginners
This course is suitable for anyone who is new to fashion and the industry and who is considering future studies in design, styling, marketing or promotion within fashion. It is an ideal experience for inquisitive and independent students who can work on their own and in teams to creative briefs and strict deadlines.
Topics Covered: Trend reports and mood-boards, Mannequin experiments, Working with photographers, preparing a shoot and critiquing the work, Industry project and research presentation, Final presentation of finished project, Museum visits, market visits and lectures from guest speakers.
- Graphics in Fashion for beginners
This course is ideal for anyone who is thinking about studying graphic design or fashion marketing and promotion at degree level and who wishes to begin a diverse and exciting portfolio.
Topics Covered: Graphic design, typography and image making, maintaining sketchbooks, logotypes, research trips in typography, photography and illustration. Museum drawing trip. Final group crit of all projects.
- Interior Design for beginners
The course is aimed at ambitious beginners who have never studied interior design and also professionals, such as architects or textile designers, who want to gain some experience of designing an interior for the first time. The projects are open and flexible enough to appeal to many different approaches.
Topics Covered: In London you will work on one project that is brand related which will enable you to access a palate of materials, colours and textures with which to design. Practical design exercises will be accompanied by applying new skills to the brief. In Milan your project work will also include making a presentation as a designer and a member of a team with the support of a model and/or a short story in digital format, and reporting the importance of research and teamwork.
- Photography and the Moving Image for beginners
This course is ideal for anyone considering future studies in photography, film or video and who wishes to build the beginnings of a unique, creative portfolio or showreel.
Topics Covered: Primitive photography, introduction to darkroom printing and experimental techniques, understanding film and
papers, history and theory of photography and discussions on the aesthetics of image making, introduction to digital photography, introduction to simple animation and narrative.
- Product Design for beginners
The course is aimed at the beginner with passion for design and process or for the individual looking for a change of career. The topics covered will form the foundation and core skills for projects on future design courses.
Topics Covered: Research skills, creative thinking and design skills, working in groups, drawing, model-making, presentation skills, including verbal and digital communication.
Advanced Courses
Advanced courses complement each other often looking at the same branch of design from completely different angles. Suitable for students who have completed at least two years of a degree in a related subject or professionals working in the field who need a boost. Students may enrol for the corresponding sessions in London and Milan or choose just one course.
Cool Hunting - Milan
This course is suitable for designers and product managers, and students with an appropriate background of studies and interests related to marketing and communication.
Topics Covered: Lectures in Cool Hunting as a tool for analysing emerging trends, Global trends and local international consumption behaviours, In-house cool hunting: strategies and case histories, Practical workshops.
Cultural Tours of the Best in Design - Milan
Anyone studying or working in design that is inquisitive, has an open mind and enjoys discussing their new ideas and the ideas of others. Also, anyone with a strong interest who is looking to improve their knowledge of contemporary design in a Milan context.
Topics Covered: You will spend time learning about current design trends and collected relevant research to present at the end of the course.
Design for Consumer Electronics - Milan
This course is suitable for students and professionals with a background in industrial design, multimedia design, visual design, graphic design, communication science or information science.
Topics Covered: Lectures and case histories in: new targets within retail, art and social media, and mobile embodiment, Design workshops.
Experience and Event Design - Milan
This course is suitable for those studying or working in communication, public relations, design or fashion companies (or those who have a strong interest in the field), and who are looking to improve their knowledge of event design in the Milan and international context. It is also suitable for international professionals planning to work in Milan or elsewhere in Europe.

Interior Design for Hotels
This course is suitable for designers, architects, interior designers and students involved in these fields.

Furniture Design
This course is suitable for designers, architects, interior designers, product managers and students from related fields.
Topics Covered: Lectures and case histories: history and evolution of domestic spaces, ways of using the kitchen, new behaviours, equipment and configurations, ergonomics and the control of activities carried out in todays kitchen. Visits. Design workshops.
