Supply Chain Management Training

Post Supply Chain Management Jobs.

Doing a Supply Chain Management Course:

In an increasingly globalized world, companies recognize the growing need for logistics and supply chain professionals. Supply chain management refers to the effective management of all functions of the supply chain such as purchasing, operations, warehousing and transport. It involves overseeing the flow of materials, information and finances from supplier to manufacturer to retailer and finally to the consumer. It usually involves the processing of customer orders and the planning and scheduling of deliveries.

An important aspect of supply chain management is effective inventory management. Many educational institutions now offer supply chain management courses up to Masters level. These may be full-time, campus-based programs or may be completed via distance or online learning. Distance or online learning allows you to achieve your qualification in your own time while remaining in full-time employment.

Choosing a program:
Supply chain management programs generally cover four core areas as follows: Logistics; Tools and Technology; Supply Chain Management Skills and Business Context. Logistics covers subjects such as Inventory Management; Production Planning and Control; Transport and Distribution Management; Warehouse Management; Inventory Management and Purchasing. Subjects covered in Tools and Technology include IT in the Supply Chain; Project Planning, Management and Control; Management of Information Systems and Simulation of Supply Chains which involves the use of proprietary software packages. Supply Chain Management Skills includes areas like Human Resource Management; Management Behavior and Effectiveness; Quality Management and Organization Analysis.

Core components of the Business Context field include Strategic Marketing; Financial Management; Business Strategy and International Supply Chain Design.

What is involved:
A Bachelor of Business in Supply Chain Management usually takes about four years to complete on a full-time basis. However, there are many postgraduate programs available that can be completed on a part-time basis. The length of time required to complete an online or distance learning qualification may differ according to the educational institution. Some will allow you to complete your program at your own pace. Others require that you complete the program according to a specific schedule. If studying online, your lectures, assignments and required readings are usually available for you to download them from the school website at your own convenience.

Accreditation:
Accreditation refers to the review of an educational institution or a program that they provide by accrediting bodies. Selecting an accredited program ensures that you are receiving a high quality of education which will give you a competitive advantage when seeking employment or promotion. Schools and programs can be accredited by a regional and / or a professional accrediting body.

There are six regional accrediting agencies in the US. If you are not sure whether your preferred program is accredited, you should call the educational institute directly to enquire about their status. You should also ask them to confirm how long they have been accredited for and when the next review is scheduled. The recognized accrediting body for the supply chain management field is the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP).

Career Options:
There is a wide range of employment opportunities for supply chain management professionals in every area of business from government to manufacturing to retail. Potential careers include Buyer, Operations Manager, Warehouse Manager, Transportation Manager, Import / Export Manager or Contract Negotiator.
