Lausanne - In a country of such
spectacular natural beauty, Lausanne is the most
beautiful of cities, a city of incredibly steep
hills that has developed tiered above the lake
on a succession of compact, south-facing
terraces. Large areas of blue water, glittering
sunlight and the white capped Savoy Alps that
overlook the buildings create a scenic
atmosphere. From medieval times, Lausanne has
stood at the Swiss cultural avant-garde. Back
then, the cathedral crowned the city the most
influential of the region; it still sits
dazzlingly on an Old Town hill, the country's
most impressive Gothic monument.
Lausanne has a population of about 150,000, and
is situated in the south-western part of
Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Geneva, 65 km
(40.4 miles) from the closest airport - Geneva,
30 km (18.6 miles) from Montreux and 230 km (143
miles) from Zurich.
Lausanne attracts a large student population to
the prestigious University of Lausanne,
Switzerland's biggest, and the French-language
arm of the Federal Institute of Technology. The
youthful spirit, and the city's hilly aspect,
has also given Lausanne a new role as a European
skateboarding capital. Attractive, interesting,
worldly, and well aware of how to have a good
time, this could be Switzerland's coolest city.
Opened in 1962, our French school in Lausanne
continues to grow and develop in this beautiful
setting.
Montreux, with just over 25,000
inhabitants, is situated at the foot of the Alps
next to Lake Geneva and is known as the "Pearl
of the Swiss Riviera". It enjoys a panoramic
mountain backdrop and is surrounded by protected
parkland. This is a charming town for children
and families, wanderers and dreamers, known for
its historic myths and traditions, scenic
beauty, jazz festival, cooperative people and
13th century castle, luxurious hotels and
cottages. Our French school enjoys an ideal
position in the centre of town, just a stone's
throw from the lake, which is a major attraction
in itself. The colourful, palm-lined lake
promenade offers up countless treasures as you
make your way along it and small coves that are
suitable for bathing and celebrations.
