Summer Design Courses in London & Milan

London Milan 2009: The Dual City Summer Sessions:
Enrol on the London Milan Summer Sessions and experience a unique two or four week course in either fashion, graphics, interiors, event or product design. If you are a beginner and wish to build a portfolio and sample a real design school atmosphere or an experienced student or professional who wishes to build upon existing skills there will be a course in our 2009 programme for you. The courses in each city have been designed to compliment each other so that by the end of your studies you will have a portfolio of new work that represents two different approaches to teaching, along with new friends and a new international perspective of your creative subject. Now in its fourth successful year, this unique collaboration between Central Saint Martins in London and Domus Academy and NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan enables students to study in two of Europe’s most inspiring cities. A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded from each school on completion on the course.

 Courses:

Our summer programmes are offered at two different levels. The beginners courses are aimed at those students who have had limited experience of the subject and want to try it for the first time, or for those who are planning future studies at an art or design college and need to develop a portfolio. These courses provide a perfect taster of design school life that allows students to ascertain if this is the correct career path for them to pursue. All advanced courses assume previous degree-level education (at least two years completed) in the subject and are aimed at people wishing to refresh existing skills, learn a new approach to current work or simply a chance to network with likeminded people.

To join any of these courses you must be 18 years old or above. All courses are offered in English. Some advanced level course lectures in Milan may be offered in ItalianCourses with simultaneous translation into English.

Beginners Courses: Fashion Design; Fashion Styling; Graphics in Fashion; Interior Design; Photography and the Moving Image; Product Design

Advanced Courses: Cool Hunting; Cultural Tour of the Best in Design; Creating a Fashion Collection; Interior Design for Retail (London only); Design for Consumer Electronics; Experience and Event Design; Textiles for Interiors (London only); Interior Design for Hotels (Milan only); Furniture Design (Milan only)

London and Milan Courses are both 9 days / 45 hours - the beginner level courses are complimentary and students must take both city sections ( a total 90 hours and 18 tuition days) with 4 days off for independent travel between the two cities. Advanced level courses can be taken in London and Milan or London OR Milan - each city section is 45 hours.

 Schools:

Central Saint Martins
From the iconic designs of London’s red Routemaster bus and the Chopper bike to theatrical productions like Phantom of the Opera; from exquisite fashion at Dior and Chloe in Paris to the current portrayal of that icon of contemporary culture, James Bond; Central Saint Martins’ alumni have made a profound impact on our lives. Our staff and students continue to build on the success of our past by pushing the boundaries of the practice and education of art and design. Based in the heart of London, Central Saint Martins is a prime location to develop expertise across fashion, textiles, fine art, graphics, product design, ceramics, theatre and jewellery plus much more. The 150 years of learning and research at the college combined with the museums, galleries, events, shops, manufacturers and creative industries make London and Central Saint Martins the ideal place to spend your summer.

In 2008, Central Saint Martins welcomed over 4,000 students on to more than 300 Summer School courses in the arts, design and performance. Over 150 of these students attended the Dual City Summer Sessions.

Domus Academy
For more than 25 years Domus AcaSchoolsdemy in Milan has shared an eminent place on the world stage as an international postgraduate school representing today what Bauhaus and the Ulm School meant in their time.  Domus Academy has always been a true pioneer of 'Made in Italy¹, not simply teaching how to design products but considering design as a complex, challenging activity that contributes to industry, culture, aesthetics and social visions. Today, Domus Academy welcomes hundreds of graduate students and professionals from over 50 countries to its new, state-of-the- art teaching and multimedia facilities in the Naviglio (canals) area of the city. Training is conducted through eight, one year master courses in Milan and one in Rome, realised with the collaboration and support of premiere companies. The school's master degrees are recognised by the University of Wales and valued at a total of 180 credits. An extensive range of short courses in spring, summer and autumn are also available.

NABA
The Milan sections of the beginners-level courses are run by NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti. NABA is an academy of fine arts and design which was formed in 1980 by a group of artists, aimed at challenging the rigid academic tradition by introducing new visions and languages closer to contemporary artistic practice and the creative professions. NABA training programmes are based on a cross-disciplinary method aimed at developing artistic and professional skills and profiles in the fields of art, design, fashion, media and graphic design. NABA campus covers an area of 6500 m2 and is located in the Navigli area, one of the liveliest districts of the city.
