Computer Training in California:
There is a wide variety of computer training
programs available in California that will
provide you with the knowledge and technical
skills required for entry to your chosen career
or to enhance your opportunities in your current
position. Technology is playing an
ever-increasing role in the lives of everyone so
even if you do not require computer skills for
employment purposes, you may want to use a
computer to keep in touch with friends and
family or to keep informed of the latest news
online. It is estimated that 75% of
administrative roles require competence in the
Microsoft Office Suite and basic computer
skills. You may also need instruction in more
specialized areas such as website design or in
specific software programs such as Quicken for
accounting.
Choosing a Program:
The primary objective for most novice computer
users is to gain familiarity with the basic
concepts of Information Technology and to learn
how to effectively use software applications in
an office environment. You may decide that
classroom based training would be most suitable
for you. The class size should be small to allow
for individual attention and should be
instructor-led and hands-on. You may have the
option of learning at either a Windows-based or
Macintosh computer. The instructor should
explain concepts, demonstrate the techniques
step by step and then allow you to perform these
techniques yourself through real-world exercises
until you are confident in your new skill.
Because computer terminology can be
intimidating, they should provide simple
explanations in everyday English while making
sure that you understand the technical terms and
acronyms for the future.
Another method of
training is through Computer-Based Training
(CBT) which is where the student learns through
using the special training programs on the
computer as opposed to learning from an
instructor. An advantage of this is that it is
self-paced. It is also particularly effective in
training people on software packages because the
CBT program can be integrated with the
application to allow the student to practice as
they work through the course.
What is involved:
The length of the course you choose depends
on your level of computer skills and the level
that you wish to achieve. CBT courses can be
completed according to your own schedule but you
can find a classroom-based training course
lasting from weeks to several months depending
on your needs. If you are a complete novice,
your program should begin with basic IT concepts
and how to use the computer and manage your
files correctly. Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Suite is a prerequisite for entry-level
positions in most industries. These courses will
give you a grounding in word processing
(Microsoft Word), spreadsheets (Microsoft
Excel), databases (Microsoft Access) and
presentation (Microsoft Powerpoint).
You should
also be trained in the use of web mail as well
as e-mail clients such as Microsoft Outlook.
Learning how to safely and effectively use the
Internet using your browser should be covered.
This should also incorporate information on how
to protect your computer from viruses or spyware
by using security software.
Accreditation:
When selecting a course, you should inquire
whether the school can provide the Microsoft
Business Certification program. This program
allows you to become certified in the Microsoft
Office applications and also in the operating
system that you use. You can also be certified
in specific job functions such as presentations
or managing budgets. This certification proves
to your employer that you possess the skills in
Microsoft Office to work efficiently and
productively. The Microsoft Business
Certification Program is made up of two
credentials: The Microsoft Certified Application
Specialist (MCAS) and the Microsoft Certified
Application Professional (MCAP). These
certifications will give you a competitive edge
in the marketplace. |
